Chapter 19 - The Point of No Return

Nathan asked Grace to meet him inside the restored library.

The hidden archive had been emptied.

Evidence now sat in federal custody.

The steel door remained open.

Nathan wanted it that way.

No more hidden rooms.

No more family secrets.

He placed documents on the table.

Grace frowned.

“What are these?”

“A trust restructuring.”

“For Lily?”

“Yes.”

Nathan sat across from her.

“The twenty-eight percent stays hers.”

Grace nodded carefully.

“But until she turns thirty, the voting control will be managed by an independent fiduciary board.”

“Not you?”

“Not me.”

Grace looked surprised.

Nathan smiled faintly.

“She is my daughter.”

“That does not mean I should control everything she owns.”

Grace looked down.

Nathan continued.

“Half the annual distributions will fund her education and future.”

“And the rest?”

“A foundation.”

“For what?”

“Legal defense for parents and children targeted through financial coercion.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

Nathan continued.

“I thought maybe she could inherit something better than an empire.”

Grace touched the papers.

“A choice.”

Nathan nodded.

“A choice.”

There was one final hearing before Richard’s criminal trial.

Victoria appeared as a cooperating witness.

Grace sat behind prosecutors.

Nathan sat beside Lily.

Richard entered wearing a jail uniform instead of a tailored suit.

For the first time, he looked old.

His attorney tried to challenge the archive evidence.

Then prosecutors played Victoria’s recordings.

Richard’s threats.

Payment instructions.

Plans to fabricate Grace’s mental health records.

Orders to delay emergency medical help after Charles collapsed.

The courtroom was silent.

Richard’s attorney finally asked for a recess.

Before officers removed him, Richard looked toward Nathan.

“You think you won?”

Nathan said nothing.

Richard smiled.

“You burned your name.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

Then Grace.

Then back at Richard.

“No.”

“I stopped worshiping it.”

Richard’s smile vanished.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Nathan.

“Are you rebuilding Cole Meridian?”

“Will you reconcile with Victoria?”

“Will Grace Bennett become your wife?”

Grace almost laughed at the last question.

Nathan raised one hand.

“I’m going to answer only one thing.”

The cameras moved closer.

“My daughter is not a scandal.”

Silence.

“She is not an inheritance dispute.”

“She is not a corporate threat.”

“She is a little girl who deserved to know her father.”

He looked toward Lily.

“And I deserved to know her.”

May you like

Nathan stepped away from the microphones.

For the first time, he did not care what headline followed.
