Chapter 17 - Nathan Burns the Empire
Richard reached toward his coat.
Nathan dropped the ledger.
“Careful.”
Richard stopped.
“If anything happens to Grace or Lily, every page of that ledger becomes public.”
Richard smiled again.
“You bluff like your father.”
Nathan checked his watch.
“Two minutes.”
Richard’s expression changed.
Nathan continued.
“At noon, copies go to federal investigators, the board, three newspapers, and every major lender connected to Vale Capital.”
Victoria’s voice suddenly came through the mansion speakers.
“And one copy already went to me.”
Richard looked around.
“Victoria?”
She was connected remotely through the estate’s old smart system.
Richard shouted.
“You stupid girl.”
Victoria answered calmly.
“No, Dad.”
“I was stupid for thirty years.”
Grace looked at Nathan.
Lily began crying harder.
Richard moved toward them.
Nathan stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Richard stared at him.
“You would destroy Cole Meridian.”
“If that’s the price.”
“Thousands of employees.”
“I’ve already arranged emergency financing for the legitimate divisions.”
Richard blinked.
Nathan continued.
“The criminal shell companies are the only things burning.”
Richard finally understood.
Nathan had spent the previous night dividing Cole Meridian’s healthy operations from every Vale-linked entity.
He had sacrificed billions in paper value to protect employees and preserve the core company.
He had done what Charles never found the courage to do.
Choose people first.
The clock tower began striking noon.

Richard looked at Nathan.
Two.
Nathan’s phone buzzed.
Three.
News alerts began appearing.
VALE CAPITAL UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.
Four.
COLE HEIR RELEASES INTERNAL RECORDS.
Five.
ALLEGED FRAUD NETWORK SPANS TWO DECADES.
Richard lunged for the ledger.
Nathan moved aside.
Richard slipped.
Detective Reyes’ voice exploded through the ballroom.
“Richard Vale.”
Richard froze.
Officers entered from three doors.
The old camera had given Reyes probable cause to move.
Richard turned toward Grace.
“You did this.”
Grace stood as an officer freed her hands.
“No.”
She looked at Nathan.
“He did what your family never expected.”
Richard’s wrists were pulled behind his back.
“What?”
Grace held Lily close.
“He chose his daughter.”
Richard was taken away.
Nathan rushed to Lily.
She threw both arms around his neck.
“Daddy.”
This time the word did not shock him.
It saved him.
But as Nathan carried her outside, Daniel called.
His voice was grim.
“Nathan.”
“What now?”
“The board removed you ten minutes ago.”
Nathan looked back at the mansion.
His family was safe.
