Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Door

The third figure was identified before noon.

His name was Grant Mercer.

He had served as Victoria Sterling’s private security chief for fifteen years.

Mercer had disappeared from the estate shortly after the banquet doors were locked.

His phone was turned off.

His apartment had been emptied.

His bank account showed a withdrawal of two hundred thousand dollars three days earlier.

Agent Sloan issued a nationwide alert.

Maya remained under federal protection with Noah.

Adrian was questioned again.

This time, he admitted knowing about the cameras.

He claimed Victoria had installed them to protect the family from potential blackmail.

He denied knowing Mercer had entered the nursery.

Maya listened from an adjoining room.

Sloan’s voice carried through the wall.

“You discussed using the child as leverage.”

“I did not mean physical harm.”

“What did you mean?”

“I thought my mother would threaten a custody case.”

“You said, ‘What if she refuses?’”

“I was under pressure.”

“From whom?”

“My mother.”

“And what pressure did you place on your wife?”

Adrian did not answer.

Maya left before the interview ended.

Vance followed her into the corridor.

“You do not have to hear any more.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because every lie I refuse to hear becomes another lie I might believe later.”

Vance nodded.

“You sound like Elena.”

Maya looked at him.

“What was she like?”

“Stubborn.”

A faint smile touched his face.

“Brave.”

“Impatient with cowards.”

“Then she would have hated my husband.”

“She would have hated what he did.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

Vance’s smile faded.

“Elena understood that weak people can cause as much destruction as cruel people.”

His phone rang.

Sloan emerged from the interview room as he answered.

Vance listened.

Then his entire posture changed.

“They found Mercer’s vehicle.”

“Where?” Sloan asked.

“Near the old Vaughn airfield.”

The airfield had been abandoned for twenty years.

It sat outside the city beside several warehouses once used by Vaughn Global.

Maya felt a chill.

“Why would he go there?”

Vance looked toward the evidence folder containing the microfilm images.

“Because one of Elena’s coded shipping records references Warehouse Seven.”

Sloan ordered a tactical team to move.

Maya stepped forward.

“I am going.”

“No,” Sloan said.

“This may be an active crime scene.”

“It may contain answers about my parents.”

“It may also contain the man who threatened your son.”

Maya looked toward Noah.

For the first time, her past and present felt like two hands pulling her apart.

Vance placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Stay with your child.”

He headed toward the exit.

Before he reached the door, a federal technician ran toward them.

“Colonel.”

“We found something in Mercer’s vehicle.”

She held up a clear evidence bag.

Inside was a recent photograph of a woman with silver-streaked dark hair.

May you like

On the back, someone had written two words.

Elena lives.
