Chapter 16 - The Price of Cowardice

The tactical team breached the steel door as steam filled the bunker.
Maya heard shouting through the command feed.
Then gunfire.
Then nothing.
The silence lasted eleven seconds.
It felt longer than the twenty-four years Maya had lived without answers.
Vance’s voice finally came through.
“Elena is alive.”
Maya collapsed against the side of the vehicle.
Mercer had escaped through a drainage tunnel.
Elena had suffered a gunshot wound to the upper arm.
The bullet had missed the major artery.
She was weak, disoriented, and severely malnourished.
But she was alive.
Maya met the ambulance at the forest road.
When the rear doors opened, Elena looked smaller than the woman in the photographs.
Her silver-streaked hair framed a face marked by years of captivity.
Maya approached slowly.
She did not know whether to hug her.
She did not know whether Elena would recognize her outside the screen.
Elena lifted one trembling hand.
Her fingers touched the crescent scar above Maya’s eyebrow.
“I told your father you would climb that table.”
Maya began to cry.
“You fell against the corner.”
“You needed four stitches.”
Maya covered Elena’s hand with her own.
“I don’t remember.”
“I do.”
Elena’s voice cracked.
“I remembered every day.”
Maya leaned forward.
Mother and daughter held each other beneath the flashing emergency lights.
No one spoke.
Not Vance.
Not Sloan.
Not the armed officers surrounding them.
Some moments did not belong to witnesses.
At the hospital, Elena revealed what had happened after the crash.
She and Jonathan had survived.
Mercer’s men captured them.
Jonathan was killed after refusing to disclose the evidence archive.
Elena was moved between secret facilities for years.
Conrad Sterling wanted access codes she had memorized.
When he died, Mercer continued the operation.
Victoria discovered Elena was alive eleven years earlier.
She paid Mercer to keep Elena hidden rather than risk the destruction of the Sterling empire.
Maya sat beside the hospital bed.
“So Victoria did not order your death.”
“No.”
Elena’s voice was weak.
“She chose something worse.”
“She chose silence.”
Maya thought about Adrian lowering his head in the ballroom.
Cowardice had become a Sterling inheritance.
The hospital room door opened.
Agent Sloan entered.
Her face was grim.
“Mercer contacted Adrian.”
Maya stood.
“What does he want?”
“He offered Adrian a deal.”
“Help him escape the country.”
“And in exchange?”
May you like
Sloan looked toward Noah’s empty carrier.
“He promised to help Adrian take his son.”
