Chapter 17 - A Father’s Betrayal

Noah had been moved to a secure pediatric floor under armed protection.
Only Maya and authorized federal personnel could enter.
Adrian’s access had been revoked.
But Adrian knew the hospital.
Sterling Medical Holdings had funded the new pediatric wing.
At three in the morning, the security system failed.
Cameras went dark.
Electronic locks released simultaneously.
Maya woke to an alarm.
She ran into the corridor.
The federal officer outside Noah’s room was unconscious.
His weapon was missing.
The crib was empty.
Maya screamed Noah’s name.
Agent Sloan arrived seconds later.
Emergency teams sealed the hospital.
A nurse reported seeing Adrian carrying a bundled infant toward the service elevators.
He had worn a physician’s coat and used an executive access badge.
Maya felt something inside her turn cold.
There was no grief.
No disbelief.
Only purpose.
Elena watched from her bed as officers filled the hallway.
“Go,” she told Maya.
“You need protection.”
“My grandson needs his mother.”
Maya took Elena’s hand.
“I just found you.”
“And I spent twenty-four years praying you would become stronger than the people who took you.”
Elena’s eyes sharpened.
“Go bring your son home.”
Adrian called Maya twenty minutes later.
His face appeared on a secure video screen.
He sat inside a moving vehicle.
Noah cried in the background.
Maya gripped the table.
“Let me see him.”
Adrian turned the camera.
Noah was strapped into his car seat.
He appeared frightened but unharmed.
“What have you done?”
“I am protecting my son.”
“From whom?”
“From the Vaughns.”
“You mean from me.”
“You are surrounded by federal agents and military investigators.”
“You inherited a corporation overnight.”
“You are not thinking clearly.”
Maya stared at him.
“You drugged a federal officer and abducted a baby from a hospital.”
“Mercer handled the officer.”
“Where are you going?”
“I need you to transfer temporary voting control of the Vaughn trust.”
“And then?”
“Mercer gives me new identities.”
“For you and Noah?”
Adrian hesitated.
Maya understood.
Mercer had promised to help him escape.
But Adrian had no guarantee he would survive.
“You are not his partner,” Maya said.
“You are his hostage.”
“I can handle him.”
“You could not handle your mother.”
Adrian’s face twisted.
“Sign the transfer.”
“No.”
“He may hurt Noah.”
“You brought Noah to him.”
The words struck Adrian.
For the first time, fear replaced his anger.
A shadow moved behind him.
Mercer leaned into the frame.
“Mrs. Sterling.”
Maya’s voice became steady.
“My name is Maya Hale.”
May you like
Mercer smiled.
“Not for much longer.”
