Chapter 18 - The Final Exchange

Mercer chose the Vaughn airfield for the exchange.

The same airfield where evidence had been hidden for decades.

A private aircraft waited on the runway.

Its engines were already running.

Mercer ordered Maya to arrive with signed transfer documents and no visible security.

Agent Sloan prepared a tactical perimeter.

Vance studied old maps of the airfield.

Elena insisted on helping from the hospital.

She remembered an underground fuel conduit connecting Warehouse Seven to the runway hangar.

Agents entered through the conduit before Maya’s arrival.

At sunrise, Maya walked onto the runway carrying a leather folder.

The silver medal rested against her chest.

Mercer stood beside the aircraft.

Adrian held Noah.

The baby cried when he saw Maya.

Every instinct told her to run toward him.

She forced herself to walk slowly.

“Give me my son.”

Mercer extended one hand.

“The documents first.”

Maya held up the folder.

“Signed authorization transferring temporary voting control of Vaughn Global.”

Adrian stared at it.

“You signed?”

Maya looked directly at him.

“I signed what was necessary to bring Noah home.”

Relief crossed his face.

Mercer took the folder.

He opened it.

The first page appeared legitimate.

The second contained a federal seizure order.

The third contained a photograph of Conrad Sterling standing beside Mercer twenty-four years earlier.

Mercer looked up.

“You think this is clever?”

“No.”

Maya stopped several yards away.

“I think you are finished.”

Mercer drew his weapon.

Adrian flinched and tightened his hold on Noah.

“Give me the real authorization.”

“There is no authorization.”

Mercer pointed the gun at the baby.

Adrian finally understood the truth.

Mercer had never planned to take him abroad.

Noah was merely leverage.

Adrian turned sideways, shielding his son with his body.

“Do not point that at him.”

Mercer laughed.

“Now you decide to become a father?”

The insult struck deeper because it was true.

Adrian looked at Maya.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“Put Noah down and step away.”

Mercer grabbed Adrian’s shoulder.

Adrian drove his elbow backward.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck Adrian beneath the ribs.

He fell but kept Noah against his chest.

Maya ran.

Mercer raised the weapon again.

Vance emerged from the hangar.

“Drop it.”

Mercer fired toward him.

Federal agents opened fire.

Mercer collapsed beside the aircraft stairs.

Maya reached Adrian.

Blood spread across his shirt.

Noah screamed between them.

Adrian loosened his arms.

Maya lifted the baby to her chest.

“He is safe,” she whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“Was any of it real?”

Maya knew what he meant.

Their marriage.

Their home.

The quiet evenings before Victoria’s cruelty became impossible to ignore.

“My love was real.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“That makes what I did worse.”

Paramedics rushed across the runway.

As they lifted him onto a stretcher, Adrian caught Maya’s hand.

May you like

“Do not forgive me.”

Then he was carried away.
