Chapter 1: The Door Bursts Open

The two coffee cups slipped from Ethan Montgomery’s hands.
They struck the polished hospital floor and exploded, sending dark liquid across his expensive shoes.
For one suspended second, nobody spoke.
Victoria stood beside Emily’s bed with the pillow still clutched against her chest. Her expression shifted rapidly—from rage to shock, then from shock to wounded innocence.
“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded.
The three investigators ignored her.
The first, a broad-shouldered man named Daniel Cross, moved toward the bed while the second kept a camera trained on Victoria. The third stepped between her and the door.
Nurse Sarah Mitchell rushed inside behind them.
“Emily, can you hear me?”
Emily’s eyes opened slowly.
Each breath felt like broken glass beneath her ribs, but air was finally reaching her lungs again.
She looked directly at Ethan.
He had not moved.
He stared at the pillow in his mother’s hands, then at Emily’s bruised face.
“Mom?” he whispered.
Victoria dropped the pillow as though it had burned her.
“She stopped breathing,” she said quickly. “I was trying to help her.”
Daniel glanced toward the ceiling.
A tiny camera had been mounted inside the smoke detector earlier that morning.
“We recorded everything,” he said.
Victoria’s composure cracked.
“You had no right to spy on me.”
“You were attempting to kill a defenseless patient,” Sarah replied.
Victoria straightened her shoulders.
“I am Victoria Montgomery. You have no idea who you’re speaking to.”
Daniel’s expression remained calm.
“I know exactly who you are.”
He reached into his jacket and displayed his credentials.
“Daniel Cross. Former federal investigator. Your daughter-in-law hired me before her fall.”
Ethan turned toward Emily.
“You hired investigators?”
Emily’s voice came out weak but clear.
“I hired them because someone had been stealing from the Montgomery Foundation.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
Emily continued staring at Ethan.
“And because someone increased my life insurance policy to fifty million dollars without my permission.”
The color vanished from Ethan’s face.
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” Emily said. “It’s fraud.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Victoria looked toward the window.
For the first time in her life, she appeared uncertain.
Daniel stepped closer.
“The police are coming upstairs.”
Victoria turned to Ethan.
“Say something.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Emily watched him carefully.
She needed to know whether the horror on his face was genuine.

Because if Ethan had planned her death with Victoria, the scene in that hospital room was not the end.
It was only the first move.
