Chapter 6: Ethan’s Choice

The hospital placed armed security outside Emily’s room.
No visitors were admitted without Daniel’s approval.
Ethan was the first person Emily asked to remove.
He stood beside her bed, stunned.
“You think I sent that medication?”
“I don’t know what to think.”
“I would never hurt you.”
“You grabbed me before I fell.”
“I was trying to stop you from leaving.”
“You wanted me to sign a fraudulent policy.”
“I didn’t know it was fraudulent.”
“You told the police I slipped.”
Ethan opened his mouth, then looked away.
That silence told her more than any confession.
“You saw the railing break,” Emily said. “You knew I didn’t slip.”
“My mother told me the truth would destroy the family.”
“And you chose the family.”
“I was terrified.”
“So was I,” Emily whispered. “I was falling.”
His eyes filled with tears.
Emily felt nothing.
He lowered his voice.
“I didn’t know she cut the railing. I swear to you. But after the fall, she told me people would blame me because we had argued. She said we had to tell the same story.”
“And you did.”
“Yes.”
“Then you sat beside my hospital bed and pretended to be a grieving husband.”
“I was grieving.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
The words settled between them.
Ethan pulled a chair closer but did not sit.
“I can help you.”
“You can tell the truth.”
“If I do, I could go to prison.”
Emily stared at him.
“You lied during an attempted murder investigation.”
“My mother controlled everything.”
“She did not control your mouth.”
Ethan’s shoulders collapsed.
For the first time, he seemed smaller than the family name he carried.
“I’ll cooperate,” he said. “Completely.”
Emily watched him carefully.
“Not for me.”
He nodded.
“No. Because it’s the right thing.”
She did not believe him yet.
But fear could sometimes lead a coward toward the truth.
Ethan called Detective Ortiz.
He admitted that Emily had not slipped.
He admitted they had argued about the policy.
He admitted Victoria ordered him to describe the fall as an accident.
Then he revealed something none of them expected.
Victoria kept a private ledger.
Not on a computer.
Not in the foundation office.

In a locked room beneath the family’s country estate.
And only Ethan knew how to open the door.
