Chapter 7: The Room Beneath Hawthorne Hall

Hawthorne Hall stood on two hundred acres in Westchester County.
The Montgomery family had owned it for generations.
Behind the main library, concealed by a sliding wall of leather-bound books, investigators found a narrow staircase descending underground.
Ethan entered the code.
The steel door opened.
Inside were rows of filing cabinets, safes, and shelves filled with handwritten ledgers.
Victoria had built an archive of every payment, bribe, threat, and secret she had used to control the family empire.
She had trusted paper more than computers.
Paper could not be hacked.
But paper could be seized.
Federal agents joined the investigation by nightfall.
They found foundation money routed to judges, contractors, political consultants, private physicians, and security firms.
They found settlements paid to former employees who had accused Montgomery executives of fraud.
They found photographs used for blackmail.
And they found a folder bearing Emily’s name.
Daniel opened it carefully.
Inside were photographs documenting Emily’s life before she met Ethan.
Her first apartment.
Her office.
Her favorite coffee shop.
Her mother’s grave in Pennsylvania.
Victoria had investigated her for years.
One report described Emily as:
INTELLIGENT. FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT. DIFFICULT TO CONTROL.
Another page contained a plan.
MARRIAGE CREATES ACCESS TO FEDERAL INVESTIGATION CHANNELS.
Emily read the sentence twice.
Ethan stood beside her, trembling.
“What does that mean?”
“It means your mother encouraged you to marry me.”
“No. I chose you.”
“Did you?”
He stared at her.
Emily remembered their first meeting at a museum fundraiser.
Ethan had seemed charmingly nervous.
Victoria had appeared delighted by their relationship from the beginning, despite later pretending to despise Emily’s background.
It had all been strategy.
Victoria wanted access to Emily’s knowledge.
Her contacts.
Her understanding of financial crime investigations.
Then Emily began uncovering the foundation fraud.
The useful daughter-in-law became a threat.
Daniel turned another page.
A handwritten note appeared near the bottom.
IF SHE DISCOVERS PROJECT CROWN, REMOVE HER BEFORE AUDIT DATE.
Emily had never heard of Project Crown.
Ethan had.
His reaction was immediate.
He backed away from the table.
“No.”
Emily watched him.
“What is it?”
He shook his head.
“It was supposed to be a family trust.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“How much money?”
May you like
Ethan’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“More than a billion dollars.”
