Chapter 18: Emily Stands
Recovery took nearly a year.
Emily’s cast was replaced by braces.
The braces were replaced by therapy.
At first, she could move only one foot.

Her legs shook violently.
Sarah remained beside her.

They played her conversation with Emily.

Her sentence ensured she would spend the rest of her life behind bars.
Senator Halston also received a life sentence after Gerald, Martin, Ethan, and several former employees testified.
The government recovered more than nine hundred million dollars.
Much of it was returned to pension funds, hospitals, students, and charities.
Sarah’s family received formal recognition that Jacob had uncovered the scholarship fraud before his death.
His name was cleared.
His work was no longer hidden.
Daniel handed Emily the folder.
“It’s over.”
Emily looked down at her cane.
“No.”
Daniel waited.
She straightened.
“The trial is over.”
