Chapter 16 - THE TRIAL OF EVELYN MORGAN

The investigation lasted seven months.

By the time the case reached court, the story had spread nationwide.

A woman declared dead.

A coffin opened during her funeral.

A judge accused of controlling a criminal network.

A stepfather who had planned the entire deception from inside the family home.

The courtroom was filled every day.

Ethan hated the attention.

Reporters waited outside his school.

Strangers recognized him in grocery stores.

Some called him brave.

Others called him the coffin boy.

Claire hated that name.

“He has a name,” she told reporters.

“Use it.”

Rebecca testified first.

She admitted helping Richard forge Claire’s financial documents.

She admitted working with Victor Cole.

She admitted meeting Judge Morgan.

Then prosecutors asked about Samuel.

Rebecca began crying.

She explained that Samuel had confronted her about the fraudulent accounts.

Morgan was present.

The argument became heated.

Samuel collapsed.

Instead of calling for immediate help, Morgan ordered everyone to wait.

By the time Dr. Lawson arrived, Samuel could not be saved.

Morgan then pressured Lawson to report the death as natural.

The courtroom became silent.

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan held her hand.

Richard testified next.

His agreement required him to tell the truth in exchange for prosecutors considering a reduced sentence.

He described the plan.

Claire would be drugged.

Lawson would pronounce her dead.

A private funeral would be arranged quickly.

After burial, Richard would obtain temporary control of the estate.

The Denver property sale would proceed.

Money would be divided.

Morgan’s hidden ownership would remain secret.

But Claire woke earlier than expected.

Richard panicked.

Instead of changing the plan, he ordered the funeral to continue.

That decision nearly killed her.

Finally, prosecutors played the recording from Samuel Parker Memorial Bridge.

Morgan’s own voice filled the courtroom.

Samuel created his own problems.

The jury listened.

Morgan stared straight ahead.

Three weeks later, verdicts were announced.

Guilty on corruption charges.

Guilty on conspiracy charges.

Guilty on fraud charges.

Guilty on charges connected to Claire’s attempted disappearance.

Victor Cole was convicted separately.

Richard entered guilty pleas.

Rebecca received a reduced sentence after cooperating.

Dr. Lawson lost his medical license and faced criminal penalties.

When Judge Morgan was led away, she turned toward Claire.

“You think this ends with me?”

Claire said nothing.

Morgan smiled faintly.

“It never does.”

May you like

Ethan heard her.

And he remembered those words.
