Chapter 17 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT RICHARD

Returning home was harder than Ethan expected.

Richard’s coffee mug was still in the kitchen cabinet.

His jacket remained in the hallway closet.

A photograph from a family vacation still hung beside the staircase.

Claire removed it.

Then she stopped.

Ethan watched her.

“What?”

Claire stared at the picture.

It showed the three of them near Yellowstone.

Richard stood behind Ethan with one hand on his shoulder.

Claire looked happy.

For years, she had believed that day was real.

Maybe parts of it were.

That was the hardest thing to accept.

People could lie about enormous things while still sharing ordinary moments.

Claire placed the picture inside a drawer instead of destroying it.

“I don’t want him controlling what we remember too.”

Ethan understood.

They slowly rebuilt their life.

Claire sold the house six months later.

Neither of them wanted to stay.

They moved into a smaller home near Ethan’s school.

No secret office.

No hidden documents.

No cameras.

No rooms that belonged to Richard.

Claire also stopped the Denver development sale.

Instead, she used part of Samuel’s land to establish the Samuel Parker Community Foundation.

The foundation funded legal aid for victims of fraud and family financial abuse.

Ethan suggested another program.

A fund for children who needed emergency housing during family crises.

Claire approved it immediately.

One afternoon, they visited Samuel’s grave.

Claire placed fresh flowers beside the stone.

Ethan stood quietly.

Then he tapped three times against the top.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Claire smiled.

“Your grandfather would have liked that.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You think he knew everything would happen?”

“No.”

“But he knew enough to prepare.”

Ethan stared at Samuel’s name carved into the stone.

“Why did he trust me with the keys?”

Claire smiled.

“Because adults underestimate children.”

Ethan laughed.

“Richard definitely did.”

“Yes.”

Claire became serious.

“And that saved my life.”

For the first time since the funeral, Ethan allowed himself to believe the nightmare was truly ending.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

It was Detective Bennett.

“What happened?”

Bennett spoke for nearly a minute.

Claire didn’t interrupt.

When the call ended, Ethan knew something was wrong.

“What?”

Claire looked toward Samuel’s grave.

“Judge Morgan wants to speak with us.”
