Chapter 12 - CLAIRE'S FINAL LETTER

Ethan opened Claire's letter alone.

He sat in the library after Sophie had fallen asleep upstairs.

The mansion was quiet.

For the first time since the suitcase opened, nobody surrounded him.

No police.

No lawyers.

No security.

Only Claire's handwriting.

“My love,

If this reaches you, then Samuel failed me before he finally found the courage to do one decent thing.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

He could hear Claire's voice in every sentence.

She wrote that she had discovered Richard's financial theft nearly four months before her death.

She confronted him privately because she did not want Ethan to lose his closest friend without proof.

Richard denied everything.

Then Celeste approached Claire.

She told Claire the missing money was repayment for what the Mercer family had denied Margaret Vale.

Claire understood the resentment.

But the theft had grown far beyond the original debt.

Claire offered Celeste a legitimate settlement.

Celeste refused.

“She does not want fairness anymore.”

“She wants power.”

Claire then described the tea.

The headaches.

The strange metallic taste.

The days she improved whenever she stayed away from the mansion.

“I asked Samuel to test me.”

“He told me I was exhausted.”

“Later I found the laboratory request torn inside his wastebasket.”

The letter became shakier near the end.

“If I am wrong, forgive me for filling your life with suspicion.”

“If I am right, forgive me for not telling you sooner.”

Then came the line that broke Ethan.

“Do not let Sophie remember me as a frightened woman.”

“Tell her I stayed because I was trying to leave her enough truth to protect herself.”

Ethan pressed the letter against his mouth.

For two years, he had been angry at himself for not recognizing how afraid Claire had become.

Now he understood.

She had hidden her fear because she was building a case.

The final paragraph contained one more secret.

“The Wyoming company does not belong entirely to Sophie.”

“Thirty percent belongs to Margaret Vale's rightful heirs.”

“I intended to give Celeste what her mother should have received.”

“But only after an independent audit.”

“If Celeste tried to take everything, the inheritance automatically shifts.”

Ethan sat upright.

He reread the sentence.

Automatically shifts.

To whom?

Claire had written the answer beneath it.

“To Margaret's second child.”

Ethan stared at the page.

Celeste had always claimed she was an only child.

According to Claire, that was another lie.

And somewhere, a second heir existed who might destroy Celeste's entire motive for taking Sophie overseas.
