Chapter 3 - WHAT CLAIRE KNEW

Marcus brought Ethan's secure laptop into the room.

The flash drive required a password.

Claire had left no instructions.

Ethan tried Sophie's birthday.

Wrong.

Their wedding anniversary.

Wrong.

The date they met.

Wrong.

Sophie watched quietly.

Then she touched her mother's photograph.

“Try the lake.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“Mommy said the happiest place was the lake.”

Ethan remembered.

Lake Waramaug.

The small Connecticut cabin where he and Claire had spent their first weekend together.

He typed WARAMAUG.

The drive opened.

Inside were folders organized by date.

Financial Records.

Medical.

Richard.

Celeste.

Sophie Trust.

And one folder labeled ONLY IF I AM GONE.

Ethan's fingers stopped over the keyboard.

Marcus stood behind him.

“Copy everything before opening individual files.”

Ethan nodded.

They created two encrypted backups.

Then Ethan opened the Celeste folder.

There were screenshots of emails.

Bank transfers.

Calendar records.

Photographs.

Claire had documented Celeste meeting Richard at hotels in New York, Boston, and Greenwich.

The meetings had begun eight months before Claire's death.

Richard Mason was Ethan's chief financial officer.

His college friend.

His daughter's godfather.

The man Ethan trusted with access to nearly every corporate account he owned.

One email from Celeste to Richard read:

“If Claire changes the trust before we finish, everything becomes harder.”

Another read:

“Ethan signs whatever she places in front of him when he's busy.”

Marcus exhaled slowly.

Ethan continued.

Claire had apparently discovered that someone tried to alter the terms of Sophie's trust.

The original trust protected nearly forty percent of Ethan's private holdings for Sophie.

If Ethan died before Sophie turned twenty-five, control passed to an independent trustee.

But a revised draft transferred temporary control to Ethan's future spouse.

Celeste.

Ethan had never approved it.

Yet the document carried what looked like his signature.

Sophie leaned against him.

“Daddy?”

Ethan closed the laptop.

“It's okay.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“No, it's not.”

Her honesty struck him harder than any accusation.

“You're right.”

He kissed her forehead.

“It isn't.”

Marcus escorted Sophie to the adjoining sitting room with the longtime housekeeper, Rosa.

Then Ethan opened the medical folder.

Claire had recorded symptoms during the final months of her life.

Dizziness.

Nausea.

Sudden weakness.

Confusion.

Her physicians had diagnosed an aggressive autoimmune disorder.

But Claire had apparently doubted the diagnosis.

One note read:

“Symptoms become worse after tea at home.”

Another:

“Celeste keeps insisting she prepare it.”

Ethan stared at the screen.

Marcus spoke carefully.

“This isn't proof.”

“I know.”

“But it is enough to preserve and give to investigators.”

Ethan nodded.

Then he opened ONLY IF I AM GONE.

A video file appeared.

Claire's face filled the screen.

She looked thin.

Tired.

But completely lucid.

“Ethan, if you're watching this, then I ran out of time.”

His hand began trembling.

Claire continued.

“I need you to understand that my greatest fear isn't what happens to me.”

“It's what happens to Sophie after I'm gone.”

Then Claire looked directly into the camera.

May you like

And said the sentence that changed everything.

“Celeste told Richard that once I disappear, you will be easy to control.”
