Chapter 18 - CLAIRE'S LAST VOICE
Ethan listened to Claire's final recording in the same room where Sophie had found the hidden phone.
Claire's voice was weak.
But steady.
“Ethan, you're in Boston.”
“I almost called you ten times.”
“I didn't because I know exactly what you would do.”
“You would come home.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
“And if I'm wrong, I will have frightened you for nothing.”
“If I'm right, I need them to believe I haven't told you yet.”
She explained that she had hidden copies with Laura, Julian, and Dr. Voss.
She believed Voss might eventually choose the truth over money.
Then she spoke about Sophie.
“She is watching more than we realize.”
“Please never tell her she was too young to remember me.”
“She remembers everything that matters.”
Ethan looked toward the doorway.
Sophie was sitting outside with Rosa.
Claire's voice continued.
“I know you.”
“You will blame yourself.”
“You'll ask why you didn't see it.”
“Don't.”
“They are counting on you looking backward.”
“Look at Sophie instead.”
Ethan covered his face with one hand.
Claire's final words were almost gentle.
“And if someday you love somebody again, love someone who never asks Sophie to make herself smaller so they can fit into our lives.”
The recording ended.
Ethan remained seated for several minutes.
Then Sophie walked in.
“Was that Mommy?”
“Yes.”
“Was she talking about me?”
“Mostly.”
Sophie climbed beside him.
“What did she say?”
Ethan smiled through tears.
“She said you remember everything that matters.”
Sophie thought about that.
“I remember her pancakes.”
Ethan laughed unexpectedly.
“They were terrible.”
Sophie smiled.
“They were burned.”
“She insisted they were caramelized.”
Sophie laughed too.
For the first time since the suitcase opened, Claire's memory entered the room without fear attached to it.
Months passed.
The criminal case became public.
Reporters gathered outside the courthouse.
Cole Holdings announced Richard's removal and commissioned an independent audit.
Ethan testified before a grand jury.
Julian testified about Celeste's financial demands.
Dr. Voss testified about the falsified medical records.
Richard testified about the capsules.
Then Celeste's attorney announced a new defense.
Celeste claimed Claire had manipulated everyone.
She claimed Claire had framed her in advance.
She claimed the recordings were selectively edited.
And most dangerously, she claimed Sophie had been coached.
Ethan's anger returned.
Not because Celeste attacked him.
Because she was attacking a six-year-old child.
Laura warned him.
“Don't react publicly.”
Ethan nodded.
But Sophie surprised all of them.
When the child advocate explained that she might never need to appear in court, Sophie asked one question.
“Does Celeste get to say Mommy lied if nobody tells what happened?”
The advocate answered carefully.
“The adults have a lot of evidence.”
Sophie nodded.
Then she held up Claire's photograph.
