Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT BEFORE THE HOSPITAL
Sophie's memory was incomplete.
She remembered sitting beneath Claire's dressing table with crayons.
Claire and Celeste were arguing.
Dr. Voss stood near the window.
Celeste told Claire to “stop making everything harder.”
Claire replied that she had already sent copies away.
Then Voss said, “If Ethan finds out, we're all finished.”
Sophie had been five.
Nobody realized she was listening.
Detective Briggs documented every detail carefully.
Later that evening, the new toxicology analysis arrived.
Claire's preserved samples showed evidence of repeated exposure to a toxic industrial compound.
The levels were consistent with prolonged low-dose exposure.
Not an accidental single event.
The original diagnosis had been wrong.
Claire had not died naturally.
The case became a homicide investigation.
Ethan sat motionless when Briggs told him.
He had suspected it for days.
Hearing it confirmed was different.
Sophie was upstairs.
He was grateful she could not see his face.
Briggs continued.
“We now have motive, financial records, threats, medical interference, and evidence of poisoning.”
“Can you prove who gave it to her?”
“Not yet.”
“What about Voss?”
“He says he never administered anything.”
“And you believe him?”
“I believe evidence.”
Ethan nodded.
That night, police arrested Richard on financial fraud, conspiracy, falsification, and additional charges connected to the guardianship documents.
Celeste was arrested on charges related to Sophie's attempted unlawful removal and unlawful confinement while investigators prepared the larger case.
Dr. Voss remained under investigation and entered a cooperation agreement.
But one question remained.
Who physically poisoned Claire?
Richard blamed Celeste.
Celeste blamed Richard.
Voss claimed he only covered up suspicious findings.
Then Marcus discovered an old backup from the kitchen security system.
Most footage had been automatically deleted years earlier.
But Claire had manually saved clips to a private server.
One clip showed Celeste preparing tea.
Another showed Richard entering the kitchen after midnight.
A third showed Dr. Voss removing a small bottle from his medical bag.
None showed anyone adding anything to Claire's drink.
Then Sophie remembered something else.
“Mommy stopped drinking Celeste's tea.”
Ethan looked at her.
“What happened after that?”
Sophie thought.
“Richard brought her vitamins.”
Ethan felt every muscle in his body tighten.
“What vitamins?”
“The yellow ones.”
Marcus searched Claire's bedroom storage.
Behind old linens, they found a forgotten bottle.
Yellow capsules.
Prescription label.
Dr. Voss's name.
The bottle had expired almost two years earlier.
But several capsules remained.
Detective Briggs sent them to the laboratory.
The results came back the next morning.
