The transfer was for eighteen million dollars.
Ethan discovered it within twenty minutes.
The money had moved from a Cole family investment account to a Luxembourg holding company.
His digital approval appeared authentic.
But Ethan had never authorized it.
Richard had used an emergency executive override known only to four people.

Richard.
The company's general counsel.
And Claire, before her death.
Marcus stood behind Ethan in the study.
“Can you freeze it?”
“I can try.”
Ethan contacted the bank's fraud department and his attorney, Laura Bennett.
Within minutes, Laura was on speakerphone.
“Do not confront them with details.”
“They already know I'm looking.”
“Then assume every account Richard touched is compromised.”
Laura instructed Ethan to freeze internal authority, suspend Richard's credentials, and secure the estate's computers.
Then she asked about Sophie.
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
“She was going to be taken out of the country.”
Laura fell silent.
“That changes everything.”
“Why?”
“Because Sophie is a beneficiary of several entities Richard has been trying to restructure.”
Ethan gripped the phone.
“How do you know?”
“Claire called me three weeks before she died.”
Ethan froze.
Laura continued.
“She asked whether a guardian could remove Sophie from the United States without your permission.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“She made me promise not to unless she found proof.”
“And after she died?”
“I thought the concern died with her.”
Ethan's voice became dangerously quiet.
“My wife died frightened.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Ethan stared through the dark window.
“You knew more than I did.”
Laura did not defend herself.
Instead she said something worse.
“Ethan, Claire also changed her will.”
He stopped breathing.
“To what?”
“I can't discuss it properly by phone.”
“You will tonight.”
Laura arrived at the mansion forty minutes later.
She carried a sealed archive envelope.
Inside was Claire's final will and an addendum created eight days before she entered the hospital.
The addendum transferred ownership of a private Wyoming holding company.
The company had seemed worthless.
But attached to it was a schedule of assets.
Private equity shares.
Real estate.

Ethan finally understood.

“Claire added one more condition.”

“Who drafted that clause?”
