Chapter 17 - THE TRUST CLAIRE BUILT

The financial investigation lasted weeks.

The stolen eighteen million dollars was frozen before Richard could move most of it again.

Several shell companies were seized.

Accounts in Luxembourg and Switzerland were identified.

The Wyoming holding company remained untouched.

Claire had designed it better than Richard realized.

Its governing documents contained anti-fraud provisions.

Any attempted transfer using falsified guardianship automatically suspended external control.

In other words, Richard's attempt to steal the company had locked him out.

Laura smiled when she discovered the clause.

“Claire anticipated almost everything.”

“Almost.”

Ethan looked toward Sophie.

Claire had not anticipated her daughter being put inside a suitcase.

The rightful share of Margaret Vale's estate became the final financial issue.

Julian again said he wanted nothing.

Ethan disagreed.

“This isn't charity.”

“I know.”

“Claire wanted your mother's promise honored.”

Julian looked toward the garden.

“And Celeste?”

“Her share will depend on the courts and restitution claims.”

Julian gave a humorless laugh.

“My sister spent half her life chasing something that was already waiting for her.”

“That doesn't erase what she did.”

“No.”

“It doesn't.”

Ethan eventually created a lawful settlement.

Margaret's original ownership interest would be honored.

Julian's portion would be placed in a foundation supporting children from financially struggling families.

At Julian's request, it would carry Margaret Vale's name.

Sophie donated one small part of her future charitable fund.

“For kids who miss their moms.”

Ethan almost cried when she said it.

The mansion also changed.

Claire's photographs returned to the hallways.

Her books went back onto the shelves.

Richard's belongings were removed from the bedroom.

Celeste's renovations were reversed.

But Ethan did not turn the house into a museum.

He asked Sophie what she wanted.

“Mommy's room should be happy.”

So they opened the curtains.

They replaced the dark drapes Celeste had chosen.

They brought flowers from the garden.

Sophie placed the old photograph beside the bed.

Then she placed the broken suitcase lock next to it.

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

“You want to keep that?”

Sophie nodded.

“Because you opened it.”

He understood.

To Sophie, the suitcase was not only the place where she had been trapped.

It was the moment her father finally saw everything.

That evening Detective Briggs called.

The prosecutor had approved the primary charges connected to Claire's death.

The case would move forward.

Richard had accepted a cooperation agreement.

Dr. Voss had surrendered his medical license.

Celeste intended to fight.

Ethan expected that.

But Briggs had one more piece of information.

“We recovered a deleted audio file from Claire's old phone.”

“What is it?”

“A message recorded the morning she went to the hospital.”

“Who was it for?”

May you like

Briggs paused.

“You.”
