Chapter 11 - THE EMERGENCY MEETING

I attended the Hale-Mercer board meeting from my hospital room.

Margaret sat on my left.

Marcus sat on my right.

A laptop camera faced us.

At 9:00 A.M., the screen filled with twelve board members.

Richard sat at the head of the conference table.

He was wearing a dark suit and the expression of a man pretending nothing had changed.

“Emily.”

“Richard.”

One director cleared his throat.

“Before we begin, I want to acknowledge Daniel’s passing.”

I swallowed.

“Thank you.”

Richard interrupted.

“Which is exactly why we need stable leadership.”

Marcus whispered, “Here it comes.”

Richard continued.

“Emily is recovering from childbirth and severe emotional distress.”

I stared directly into the camera.

“My emotional condition is not on today’s agenda.”

Richard smiled.

“Actually, your ability to exercise the trust vote is relevant.”

A lawyer beside him stood.

“We filed a motion this morning requesting temporary suspension of Mrs. Mercer’s corporate voting authority.”

Margaret slid a document toward me.

I already knew what it was.

“Has the court granted that motion?”

Silence.

Richard’s lawyer answered.

“Not yet.”

“Then I retain full authority.”

Several directors shifted in their seats.

Richard’s confidence faded slightly.

I continued.

“As controlling trustee of fifty-five percent of voting shares, I move to remove Richard Hale from all temporary executive authority pending investigation.”

Chaos erupted.

Richard stood.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

I raised my voice just enough to cut through the room.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

“You’re destroying your grandfather’s company.”

“No.”

I looked at the directors.

“I’m protecting it.”

Richard slammed a hand onto the table.

“On what grounds?”

Marcus leaned toward the camera.

“Fraud.”

The room became silent.

Then we released the first documents.

The forged deed.

The attempted bank transfer.

The Blackridge purchase agreement.

The private loan guarantees.

The transfers to Kelsey’s shell company.

Richard’s face slowly drained of color.

One director whispered, “Richard, what is this?”

He looked around the table.

“This is Daniel’s revenge.”

I almost smiled.

Daniel was dead.

And Richard was still afraid of him.

Then Richard made his final mistake.

He pointed toward the camera.

“She has no right to those documents.”

Marcus immediately replied.

“So you acknowledge they are authentic?”

Richard stopped.

The room stayed silent.

His attorney closed his eyes.

I cast my vote.

Fifty-five percent.

Two independent directors joined me.

Then another.

May you like

Then another.

At 9:43 A.M., Richard Hale was removed from executive authority.
