Chapter 15 - THE MAN DANIEL REALLY WAS

Daniel continued speaking from the screen.

“When I married you, Richard told me I was marrying into Hale-Mercer.”

“He was wrong.”

“I married Emily.”

I cried silently.

“I loved the woman who ate cereal at midnight, hated folding laundry, cried at old movies, and pretended she didn’t.”

Margaret quietly turned away.

Daniel smiled for one more second.

Then he became serious.

“I spent years tolerating Richard because you loved him.”

“I thought keeping peace was the kind thing.”

“I was wrong.”

My chest tightened.

“If he is using my death to frighten you, do not choose peace.”

“Choose truth.”

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then I opened the audio file.

Richard’s voice appeared.

The recording had been made in Daniel’s office.

Richard said, “You are not taking my company.”

Daniel answered calmly.

“I’m not taking anything.”

“You froze the guarantee.”

“Because you hid twelve million dollars in debt.”

“That money comes back when the development closes.”

“You put company employees at risk for Kelsey’s investment.”

Richard’s voice became louder.

“You think you’re better than me because you married my daughter?”

“No.”

Daniel paused.

“I think Emily deserves better than spending the rest of her life cleaning up after you.”

My tears fell harder.

Richard said, “Be careful.”

Daniel answered, “Is that a threat?”

A long silence followed.

Then Richard said, “It’s advice.”

The recording ended.

Margaret looked shaken.

Marcus saved three copies immediately.

“Federal investigators need this.”

I nodded.

“Give it to them.”

My grief felt different now.

For three weeks, I had imagined Daniel’s last days as ordinary.

Breakfast.

Work.

Phone calls.

Then the highway.

Now I knew he had been carrying a secret battle alone.

He had been trying to protect me.

Maybe too much.

I wished he had told me.

I wished I could yell at him for not telling me.

I wished I could hear him laugh when I yelled.

But wishes did not change the room.

Grace needed me.

The company needed someone honest.

And Daniel had left me enough truth to fight with.

I closed the laptop.

“What happens next?”

May you like

Marcus answered.

“Court.”
