Chapter 11 - THOMAS WHITMORE RETURNS

Mariana arrived twenty-two minutes later.

Two security vehicles were already outside.

Inside the library, Andrew stood near the fireplace.

Across from him sat an older man wearing a dark wool coat.

Thomas Whitmore.

The resemblance was undeniable.

Andrew’s hands were clenched.

Thomas looked toward Mariana.

“So this is Gabriel’s daughter.”

Mariana ignored the comment.

She looked at Andrew.

“Are you okay?”

He laughed once.

“No.”

Thomas leaned back.

“You always were emotional.”

Andrew turned on him.

“You were dead.”

“I allowed people to believe I was dead.”

“For fifteen years.”

“Yes.”

“My mother buried an empty coffin.”

“That was her decision.”

Andrew stared at him.

“You watched me grow up from a distance?”

Thomas looked almost bored.

“I monitored what mattered.”

Andrew’s voice cracked.

“I was your son.”

“You still are.”

“No.”

The word came out immediately.

Thomas studied him.

Then his attention returned to Mariana.

“You created complications.”

Mariana remained standing.

“I tend to do that when people steal money.”

Thomas smiled.

“Careful.”

“You’re in my house.”

His smile disappeared.

“No.”

He glanced around the library.

“According to your lawyers, I’m in your house.”

Mariana understood the insult.

He had spent years watching Andrew live inside assets controlled by someone else.

Thomas did not see it as protection.

He saw it as humiliation.

Andrew stepped between them.

“Why are you here?”

Thomas looked at his son.

“Because Margaret lost control.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

“In Geneva?”

Thomas did not answer.

Andrew took a step closer.

“Did she steal from my company for you?”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“Your company?”

The question cut Andrew deeply.

Mariana saw it.

Thomas continued.

“You spent years pretending to be a king inside another family’s castle.”

“Don’t speak to him like that.”

Mariana’s voice was calm.

Thomas turned toward her.

“Still protecting him?”

“No.”

“I stopped doing that.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because there are crimes connected to my companies.”

“And I don’t run from problems.”

Thomas smiled again.

“You sound like Gabriel.”

“Good.”

Thomas stood.

He was still tall despite his age.

“Your father and I built something together once.”

Gabriel had never mentioned that.

Mariana’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“A fund.”

“Small at first.”

“Then very successful.”

“What happened?”

“Gabriel developed morality.”

Thomas said the word as though it described a disease.

“He wanted transparency.”

“I preferred efficiency.”

Mariana understood.

“You stole from him.”

Thomas’s smile vanished.

“He took what belonged to me.”

The library doors opened.

Gabriel entered.

Thomas turned slowly.

For the first time, true emotion crossed his face.

“Gabriel.”

Gabriel stopped ten feet away.

“Thomas.”

Andrew looked between the two men.

Gabriel’s voice remained steady.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Thomas smiled.

“And you should have taught your daughter not to marry my son.”

Gabriel looked at Andrew.

“No.”

“I should have taught her sooner that saving someone does not make them worthy of her.”

Andrew lowered his eyes.

Thomas saw it and smiled.

“There.”

“That weakness.”

“That is exactly what I came to fix.”

Andrew looked up.

Thomas stepped toward him.

“I’m going to give you one opportunity.”

“To do what?”

“To stop apologizing.”

“To stop begging.”

“To stop allowing this woman to dismantle your life.”

Andrew stared at him.

Thomas reached into his coat and removed a folder.

Inside were documents.

“Come with me.”

“I can restore everything.”

Andrew looked down at the paperwork.

“What is this?”

Thomas smiled.

May you like

“Your real inheritance.”
