Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE STAIRCASE

By noon, the boardroom had become an evidence room.

Security footage filled three screens.

Mariana watched without blinking.

At 6:43 the previous evening, Margaret entered the second-floor dressing room alone.

She opened the jewelry cabinet.

She removed the emerald necklace.

She placed it inside a small cream envelope.

At 6:47, she walked into the east hallway.

Brenda appeared.

Margaret handed her the envelope.

No audio existed in that corridor.

But their faces were clear.

At 6:58, Brenda entered Mariana and Andrew’s bedroom.

She stayed for four minutes.

At 7:02, Brenda exited without the envelope.

At 7:21, Margaret publicly announced that the necklace was missing.

At 7:24, the confrontation began.

Andrew stared at the footage.

His face was gray.

Brenda stood near the wall.

Margaret sat at the table with both hands folded.

Mariana finally looked at her.

“Where did Brenda put it?”

Margaret said nothing.

Andrew exploded.

“Answer her.”

Margaret looked at her son.

“Do not speak to me that way.”

“You framed my wife.”

“She was leaving you eventually.”

Andrew stared.

“What?”

Margaret’s control finally cracked.

“She was too powerful.”

“She had connections we didn’t understand.”

“She had money you couldn’t trace.”

“She never needed us.”

“And that frightened you?”

“No.”

Margaret pointed at Mariana.

“It should have frightened you.”

Mariana remained calm.

Margaret stood.

“A wife who can walk away whenever she wants is dangerous.”

“A wife should need her husband.”

Mariana’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But the disgust was unmistakable.

Andrew closed his eyes.

Margaret continued.

“I wanted you to stop worshipping her.”

Andrew opened his eyes.

“I hit her.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You chose to do that.”

The words landed with terrible precision.

Andrew recoiled as if Margaret had struck him.

Mariana watched him absorb the truth.

His mother had manipulated the scene.

Brenda had helped.

But Andrew had raised his own hand.

Twice.

No one had made that decision for him.

Mariana turned toward Brenda.

“Where is the necklace?”

Brenda laughed nervously.

“You think I’m going to help you?”

Evelyn slid a document across the table.

“This is a preservation order.”

“We have already informed your attorney that deletion or destruction of relevant evidence may create additional legal exposure.”

Brenda did not touch the paper.

Mariana looked at her.

“Where is it?”

Brenda’s eyes moved toward Andrew.

He looked away.

That seemed to wound her more than anything.

Finally, she whispered.

“In Mariana’s closet.”

Andrew looked up.

“Where?”

“Inside the lining of a gray suitcase.”

Mariana’s stomach turned.

The same suitcase she had packed before leaving the mansion.

She had almost carried it out.

If she had, Margaret could have called the police.

The necklace would have been found in her possession.

The entire trap suddenly became clear.

Margaret had not merely wanted to humiliate her.

She had wanted evidence strong enough to destroy her reputation.

Mariana looked at Margaret.

“You were prepared to have me arrested.”

Margaret’s face was cold.

“I was prepared to protect my son.”

Mariana shook her head.

“No.”

May you like

“You were prepared to own him.”
