Chapter 19 - THE SECOND COMPARTMENT

The suitcase was still sealed in evidence storage.
Investigators reopened it that afternoon.
Mariana watched through glass.
The necklace had been removed days earlier.
Technicians examined the lining again.
At first, nothing appeared unusual.
Then one technician found a narrow seam beneath the base.
He cut it carefully.
Inside was a flat waterproof pouch.
Mariana felt her pulse change.
The pouch contained a microSD card and a handwritten note.
The note had only four words.
IN CASE THOMAS FAILS.
Evelyn looked at Mariana.
“This wasn’t planted to frame you.”
“No.”
“It was hidden from someone.”
“Probably Thomas.”
The card was examined before being opened.
It contained thousands of files.
Bank statements.
Corporate records.
Photographs.
Recorded conversations.
Names.
Politicians.
Executives.
Attorneys.
Bankers.
People Mariana recognized from newspapers.
Others she had never heard of.
The financial network stretched across decades.
Then a folder appeared with her father’s name.
GABRIEL ESCALANTE.
Mariana stared at it.
Evelyn looked toward her.
“We don’t have to open this without counsel.”
Mariana’s voice was steady.
“Open it.”
Inside were eight documents.
The first showed the twelve-million-dollar transfer Margaret had revealed.
The second explained it.
Gabriel had moved the funds into a protected account after discovering Thomas’s unauthorized transactions.
The money had later been returned to clients.
The records included bank confirmations.
Margaret’s accusation had been constructed from half the evidence.
Mariana exhaled.
Then she opened the final file.
A scanned letter written by Elias Vale.
The date was one day before he disappeared.
GABRIEL,
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THOMAS KNOWS WE HAVE THE LEDGER.
I NO LONGER TRUST MARGARET.
SHE HAS BEEN MOVING DOCUMENTS FOR HIM.
IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, DO NOT LET THEM TURN ANDREW INTO WHAT THOMAS HAS BECOME.
HE IS ONLY A CHILD.
MARIANA read the final line twice.
Andrew had been twelve at the time.
Elias knew him.
Mariana called her father.
Gabriel arrived twenty minutes later.
He read the letter in silence.
His eyes filled, but he did not cry.
“I never saw this.”
Mariana watched him.
“Elias knew Margaret was involved.”
“Yes.”
“He was trying to protect Andrew.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Gabriel sat down.
“Because Elias was Andrew’s godfather.”
Mariana frowned.
“Andrew never mentioned him.”
“He wouldn’t remember much.”
Gabriel looked at the old letter.
“Margaret erased Elias from the family story after he disappeared.”
Mariana felt the implications expand.
Thomas and Margaret had not merely hidden financial crimes.
They had rewritten Andrew’s childhood.
They had shaped what he believed.
Who he trusted.
What he feared.
Her phone rang.
It was Andrew.
She answered.
His voice was urgent.
“Mariana, I found something in my mother’s safe deposit records.”
“What?”
“A storage unit.”
“Where?”
“Milwaukee.”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because it was opened the week Elias Vale disappeared.”
Mariana stared at Gabriel.
Andrew continued.
“And according to the access log, someone visited it yesterday.”
“Who?”
A pause.
May you like
“Brenda.”
