Chapter 15 - MARIANA'S FALL

By 8:00 the next morning, financial news channels were reporting the allegations.

ESCALANTE HEIRESS LINKED TO WHITMORE FUND SCANDAL.

CHARITY MONEY QUESTIONED.

CORPORATE POWER STRUGGLE TURNS CRIMINAL.

Mariana watched the headlines without reacting.

Gabriel did not.

“This was Thomas’s plan.”

“Maybe.”

“You think Margaret created those documents overnight?”

“No.”

Mariana looked at the screen.

“I think they prepared them years ago.”

Gabriel stopped pacing.

Mariana continued.

“Margaret always needed a person she could blame if the system was exposed.”

“Before me, maybe that person was Brenda.”

“After I married Andrew, I became more useful.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Because of your access.”

“And because my name made the transactions look legitimate.”

Evelyn entered.

“The interview is voluntary.”

“I’m going.”

“Mariana.”

“I’m going.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You do not owe anyone cooperation when they are trying to frame you.”

Mariana stood.

“That is exactly when cooperation matters.”

At the federal office, Mariana answered questions for nearly four hours.

She explained the investments.

The holding companies.

Her access credentials.

Her role in Whitmore International.

She handed over devices.

She authorized financial review.

She hid nothing.

Across town, Andrew held a press conference.

Mariana did not know he planned it.

He walked to a podium outside Whitmore headquarters.

Reporters shouted questions.

“Did Mariana Escalante steal from your company?”

“Are you filing for divorce?”

“Did she freeze your accounts?”

“Did she frame your mother?”

Andrew raised a hand.

The crowd quieted.

“My wife did not steal from Whitmore International.”

Cameras clicked.

Andrew continued.

“She saved it.”

The reporters erupted.

He waited.

“Six years ago, my company was close to collapse.”

“I did not know until this week that the investment which rescued us came from a group controlled by Mariana’s family.”

“She never used that fact to humiliate me.”

“I humiliated her.”

The questions stopped.

Andrew looked directly into the cameras.

“Two nights ago, I struck my wife during an argument.”

“I believed an accusation without evidence.”

“I was wrong.”

“I am responsible for what I did.”

“And I will accept whatever consequences follow.”

Inside the federal building, Mariana saw the live broadcast on a silent television.

Her expression remained controlled.

But something inside her shifted.

Not forgiveness.

Not love.

Just recognition.

Andrew was finally telling the truth when it cost him something.

Outside headquarters, a reporter shouted.

“Are you saying your mother lied?”

Andrew looked at the cameras.

“Yes.”

Another reporter called out.

“Do you believe Margaret Whitmore committed financial crimes?”

Andrew paused.

“I believe investigators should follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

In Geneva, Margaret watched the broadcast from a hotel suite.

Thomas stood behind her.

She turned off the television.

“He betrayed us.”

Thomas smiled.

“No.”

“He finally became useful.”

Margaret looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas picked up his phone.

May you like

“It means now we know exactly where to hurt him.”
