Chapter 16 - THE ABDUCTION THAT WASN'T

That evening, Andrew disappeared.
His car was found in an underground parking garage.
The driver’s door was open.
His phone lay beneath the front seat.
There was no blood.
No sign of a struggle.
Mariana received the call at 9:26 p.m.
Her first instinct was anger.
Then fear arrived.
She hated that it still could.
Gabriel organized private security.
Police began reviewing cameras.
At 10:04, Mariana received a text from Andrew’s phone.
COME ALONE TO THE OLD HARBOR WAREHOUSE.
IF YOU WANT HIM ALIVE, NO POLICE.
Evelyn read the message.
“You’re not going alone.”
“I know.”
Mariana stared at the phone.
“They expect panic.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“What are you thinking?”
“Thomas doesn’t need money from me.”
“He wants control.”
“Then Andrew isn’t the target.”
“I am.”
Mariana contacted investigators.
The warehouse was surrounded covertly.
At 11:18, Mariana entered through the front entrance wearing a concealed microphone.
The building was nearly empty.
One light glowed near the center.
Andrew sat in a chair.
His hands were not tied.
Mariana stopped.
“Andrew?”
He looked up.
His face showed confusion.
“You came?”
She stared at him.
“You’re not being held.”
“No.”
Footsteps echoed behind them.
Thomas emerged from the shadows.
Margaret walked beside him.
Mariana almost laughed.
“This is your plan?”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“You always were arrogant.”
“You sent a fake kidnapping message.”
“To see whether you still cared about him.”
Mariana looked at Andrew.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Andrew stood.
“My father told me he had evidence that would clear you.”
“He told me to come alone.”
Thomas smiled.
“And both of you did exactly what I expected.”
Mariana remained calm.
“What do you want?”
Thomas walked toward a metal table.
Documents were waiting.
“Your signature.”
“On what?”
“A settlement.”
Mariana glanced at the first page.
She would transfer certain corporate interests.
Withdraw allegations involving Northstar.
Decline to cooperate in foreign investigations.
In return, Thomas would provide evidence supposedly clearing Mariana.
She looked up.
“You forged evidence against me so you could sell me the cure.”
Thomas smiled.
“Business.”
Andrew stepped toward his father.
“You used me to bring her here.”
“Yes.”
“You sent the kidnapping message?”
“Yes.”
Andrew’s face hardened.
Thomas looked at him.
“Do not become dramatic.”
Mariana placed the papers down.
“No.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“Think carefully.”
“I have.”
“You could lose your reputation.”
“Maybe.”
“You could lose your companies.”
“Maybe.”
“You could lose your freedom.”
Mariana smiled.
“But you’ve made one mistake.”
Thomas frowned.
“What?”
“You still think I came here alone.”
The warehouse doors exploded open with noise.
Federal agents entered from multiple sides.
Margaret spun around.
Thomas did not move.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
Mariana touched the microphone beneath her collar.
“You just described the agreement on a live recording.”
Thomas stared at her.
Then he laughed softly.
“You think this ends anything?”
Agents moved toward him.
He lifted his hands.
“No.”
“I think this begins the part where you stop controlling the story.”
Margaret backed toward a side door.
An agent blocked her.
Andrew stood beside Mariana.
He looked at Thomas as handcuffs closed around his wrists.
Thomas leaned toward his son.
“You think she won.”
Andrew shook his head.
“This was never about winning.”
Thomas smiled.
“You still don’t understand your wife.”
Mariana looked at him.
Thomas’s eyes settled on her.
“Ask her who owns the debt on your company now.”
Andrew glanced toward Mariana.
May you like
Thomas started laughing as agents led him away.
