She had invested in Caldwell Vineyards during its first expansion.
In exchange, she received twenty-eight percent of the company’s nonpublic voting shares.
Claire inherited those shares.
After she married Lucas, Robert attempted to force her to transfer them.
She refused.
When Claire died, the shares should have passed to Maya under a private trust.
Instead, Robert produced a forged document claiming Claire sold them back to the family.
The flash drive contained both versions.
The forged sale.
And the original trust.
Maya had not known about the shares until she found Claire’s letter.
If the trust was valid, Maya owned enough voting power to remove Robert from the company.
The Caldwells had not only killed Claire to steal her house.
They had stolen control of their own empire from her estate.
I looked at Maya.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I found the trust two days before the dinner.”
“I wasn’t sure it was real.”
“Lucas discovered me copying it.”
“That’s why they took you.”
She nodded.
“They wanted the flash drive and the key.”
The attorney general froze the disputed shares.
Banks suspended the Caldwell family’s access to several company accounts.
The vineyard’s board called an emergency meeting.
Robert issued a public statement accusing Maya of fraud.
Victoria claimed Claire had been mentally unstable and incapable of creating a valid trust.
Again, they used the same story.
A woman resisted.
The family questioned her sanity.
Adrian was arrested in Oakland before dawn.
Police found him inside a rented warehouse.
The rifle used to fire at my condo was hidden in his car.
So were copies of my passport and the Swiss travel documents.
During questioning, he demanded immunity.
He offered to testify against Lucas and Robert.
But he refused to implicate Victoria.
“My mother was protecting the family,” he said.
Sergeant Ruiz showed him Claire’s recording.
Adrian’s face lost color.
Then investigators played the dining room video of him striking me.
“You repeated the same method,” Ruiz said.
“You knew exactly what would happen after Valerie refused.”
Adrian finally asked for an attorney.
Meanwhile, Daniel restored Claire’s final voice message.
Her voice was quiet but clear.
“If you are hearing this, they have already tried to make my death look like an accident.”
“I am not suicidal.”
“I am not leaving voluntarily.”
“Lucas threatened me.”
“Robert controls the sheriff.”
“Victoria controls Dr. Pierce.”
“And Adrian knows where they plan to take my car.”
The message ended with an address.
It belonged to an abandoned Caldwell storage facility near Mount Veeder.
Federal agents searched it.
