Chapter 13 - THE ORCHARDFederal agents closed the riverfront property.

Ground-penetrating radar detected a sealed structure beneath an abandoned well.
The well had not appeared on any recent property maps.
Victoria ordered it filled two months after Claire’s death.
Investigators excavated carefully.
They recovered personal items belonging to Claire.
Her bracelet.
Her shoes.
A torn section of her dress.
Human remains were also discovered.
The identification process would take time.
But Maya recognized the bracelet immediately.
Victoria was arrested before sunrise.
Robert was arrested at Caldwell Vineyards.
Lucas remained in federal custody.
Adrian’s attorneys withdrew from his case after learning he had used one of their vehicles during the attack on my condo.
Dr. Pierce attempted to leave the country.
Agents stopped him at San Francisco International Airport.
The entire family structure began collapsing in forty-eight hours.
Yet Victoria continued denying everything.
She claimed Claire’s remains had been placed on the property by Maya.
She accused me of joining a conspiracy to steal the vineyard.
She described Adrian’s assault as a private marital misunderstanding.
Her certainty never broke.
Not even when reporters asked why my forged deed had been found on the yacht.
Not even when investigators revealed the cellar.
Not even when Owen testified.
Robert reacted differently.
He requested a private meeting with prosecutors.
He offered documents implicating Victoria in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Lucas offered to testify against Robert.
Adrian offered to testify against Lucas.
The family that demanded absolute loyalty began betraying one another before the first trial date was set.
Maya attended the recovery at the orchard.
I remained beside her.
When investigators carried the sealed remains away, she did not cry.
She stood very still.
“I spent nine years wondering whether she was cold,” she said.
I had no answer.
No sentence could repair that kind of loss.
“She came back,” I said finally.
Maya looked at me.
“The truth came back.”
The medical examiner later confirmed the remains belonged to Claire.
Her injuries did not match the official crash report.
Evidence suggested she died hours after the dining room incident.
She had not died immediately.
Someone had kept her alive long enough to force a signature.
Daniel examined Claire’s property transfer again.
The time stamp showed it was notarized four hours after the family claimed she died.
A thumbprint appeared beside the signature.
The print belonged to Claire.
She had been forced to sign while injured.
The notary was still alive.
Her name was Evelyn Price.
May you like
She had attended the dinner where Adrian struck me.
She was one of the twenty witnesses.
