The signal disappeared before they could locate the phone.
Lucas told police his wife was emotionally unstable.
He claimed she had become obsessed with Claire’s death.
He reported her missing and performed concern for television cameras.
I watched his interview from the hospital.
He wore a dark suit and stood beside Victoria.
“My wife needs help,” he said.
“We only want her home safely.”
Victoria placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
She looked like a grieving mother.
The woman had watched blood run down my face only hours earlier.
Now she was asking the public to pray for Maya.
Sergeant Ruiz turned off the television.
“They are building a story.”
“The same story they built around Claire.”
“And around you.”
Daniel returned to the flash drive.
A folder called CALDWELL PROTOCOL contained detailed instructions.
The family had developed a method for obtaining property from women who married into the family.
First, investigate the target.
Second, create financial dependence or emotional isolation.
Third, present the property transfer as a family obligation.
Fourth, document the woman’s refusal as irrational behavior.
Fifth, obtain medical statements.
Sixth, pressure witnesses to support the family.
If the woman still resisted, the final instruction contained only two words.
CONTROL EVENT.
Claire’s control event had been the dinner recorded on video.
Mine had been the plate.
There were seven other women listed.
A former bookkeeper.
Robert’s widowed sister-in-law.
A vineyard manager’s daughter.
A cousin’s former fiancée.
Each woman had owned valuable property.
Each lost it after a crisis.
One entered a psychiatric facility.
One left California.
One died from an apparent overdose.
Claire died in the car crash.
I stared at the list.
“This family has been doing this for years.”
Ruiz nodded.
“And Maya collected proof.”
A folder marked MAYA contained recent photographs.
Lucas had been following his own wife.
One picture showed Maya entering Claire’s old riverfront house.
Another showed her meeting with a retired police officer.
A typed note read:
MAYA KNOWS TOO MUCH.
REMOVE BEFORE ANNUAL DINNER.
The annual dinner was the one I had attended.
Maya had known she was in danger.
She gave me the flash drive because she believed she might not leave the estate.
A new file appeared inside the drive.
It had been uploaded remotely after Maya’s call.
The title was simple.
WHERE THEY TOOK CLAIRE.
