Chapter 6 - THE CELLAR UNDER THE VINEYARDThe attorney general’s office obtained a search warrant before sunrise.

By then, Adrian had been released on bail.
His attorneys described the assault as a misunderstanding between spouses.
A judge issued a restraining order preventing him from contacting me.
He violated it within twenty minutes.
A blocked number called my hospital room.
“You need to tell the police you overreacted,” Adrian said.
“You hit me with a plate.”
“I lost control.”
“You planned to steal my home.”
“That wasn’t stealing.”
“My mother was going to live there.”
“Using a forged deed.”
Silence followed.
He had not expected me to know about it.
“Where is Maya?” I asked.
“My brother says she ran away.”
“Claire didn’t run away.”
Adrian’s voice became colder.
“You have no idea what Claire did to Lucas.”
“I saw the video.”
Another silence.
This one lasted longer.
“Give them the drive,” he said.
“It has already been copied.”
“You’re lying.”
“Ask your mother.”
He hung up.
I gave the recording to Sergeant Ruiz.
Adrian’s bail was challenged immediately.
Meanwhile, investigators entered the old cellar beneath the Caldwell vineyard.
The entrance had been hidden behind stacked wine barrels.
The map on the flash drive led to a narrow corridor ending at a reinforced door.
Inside, they found a chair bolted to the floor.
A shelf of sedatives.
Boxes of forged deeds.
Old video equipment.
And a wall covered with photographs.
Every woman listed in the Caldwell Protocol appeared there.
Notes had been written beneath the images.
COMPLIANT.
RESISTANT.
ISOLATED.
FINANCIALLY USEFUL.
My photograph appeared near the center.
Beneath it, someone had written:
PRIDE CONNECTED TO CONDO.
BREAK PUBLICLY.
Sergeant Ruiz sent me the photograph.
I stared at those three words.
Break publicly.
The dinner had been designed to humiliate me in front of twenty people.
Adrian’s violence had not been entirely spontaneous.
The family expected something to happen.
They had positioned witnesses around the table.
They had prepared their statements.
They had already created the forged deed.
Ruiz called from the cellar.
“There is another room.”
“What is inside?”
“Personal belongings.”
A purse belonging to the woman who supposedly overdosed.
The bookkeeper’s identification.
Claire’s wedding ring.
And Maya’s scarf.
They had brought Maya into the cellar.
But she was no longer there.
On the wall behind the chair, she had scratched three words into the wood.
