She had watched another woman bleed and repeated the same lie.
The plate slipped.
Her cooperation revealed that the family held yearly dinners to test loyalty.
Relatives were expected to protect one another regardless of what occurred.

The twenty witnesses had not invented their excuses after Adrian hit me.
They had practiced silence for years.
Evelyn also revealed that Victoria maintained a private archive called the Loyalty Book.
It listed every crime, payment, secret, and favor connected to family members.
The book allowed her to control everyone.
It was not on the yacht.
It was not in the cellar.
It was hidden in Robert’s private tasting room.
Federal agents searched the room.
Behind a cabinet, they discovered a safe.
Inside was the Loyalty Book.
The final pages contained a schedule for the night of my assault.
8:00 - CONDO DISCUSSION.
8:20 - SIGNATURE.
8:30 - CONTROL EVENT IF NECESSARY.
9:00 - PHYSICIAN ARRIVAL.
9:30 - TRANSFER VALERIE.
Adrian struck me at eight twenty-seven.
The physician had already been waiting in a guesthouse.
