Chapter 12 - THE SECOND CARThe vehicle behind the wall carried Claire’s registration number.

Its identification plate had been removed.

The driver’s door contained a dark stain.

The front windshield was cracked from the inside.

The car recovered from the ravine had belonged to another Caldwell company.

Its identification number had been altered.

The family had staged the crash using a duplicate vehicle.

That meant Claire had never been inside the car found below the mountain road.

Her body had been placed there separately.

The official accident investigation had been manufactured from beginning to end.

A former towing contractor named Frank Delaney appeared repeatedly in the financial records.

He had died four years earlier.

His son still operated the business.

Investigators searched the company archives.

They found a handwritten invoice from the night Claire died.

MOVE VEHICLE A TO STORAGE.

VEHICLE B TO RAVINE.

DELIVERY TRUCK TO FOLLOW.

The authorization carried Adrian’s signature.

The delivery truck belonged to Caldwell Vineyards.

It had a refrigerated cargo compartment.

Owen Caldwell, Robert’s youngest nephew, had been sixteen at the time.

His name appeared beside the words SAW TOO MUCH.

Owen had attended the dinner when Adrian attacked me.

He claimed he had been looking at his phone.

Now we understood why.

He was not simply protecting Adrian.

He had been trained to look away.

Ruiz located Owen at a hotel near Sacramento.

He agreed to speak only if federal agents protected his six-year-old daughter.

During the interview, he admitted hiding in the upper hallway on Claire’s final night.

He saw Lucas restrain her.

He saw Claire fall against the fireplace.

She remained conscious.

Dr. Pierce examined her and said she needed immediate medical treatment.

Victoria refused to call an ambulance.

Pierce gave Claire an injection.

She became unable to speak but continued breathing.

Robert ordered the family’s employees to place her inside the refrigerated truck.

“Was Claire alive when the truck left?” Ruiz asked.

Owen began crying.

“She moved her hand.”

I felt Maya grip mine.

Owen continued.

“Adrian drove the duplicate car.”

“Lucas and Robert took the truck.”

“My aunt Victoria stayed behind to clean the dining room.”

“What happened to Claire after that?”

“I don’t know.”

“But my uncle returned without her.”

Owen took an old photograph from his wallet.

It showed Claire standing beside a young Maya.

On the back, Claire had written a date and two words.

ORCHARD WELL.

Maya looked at the photograph.

“The old orchard is behind the riverfront house.”

The house Victoria had stolen.
