Chapter 1 - THE BASEMENT DOOR

The sirens were still approaching when every face at the table turned toward Maya.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Adrian looked as though someone had driven a knife through the center of his carefully controlled world.
Charles stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall behind him.
“Maya, shut your mouth.”
Maya’s hands began trembling.
But she did not sit down.
Claire pressed the blood-soaked napkin against her temple and watched the family unravel.
The dispatcher was still on the phone.
“What is in the basement?” Claire asked.
Maya swallowed.
“Records.”
Charles stepped toward her.
“You have no idea what you are talking about.”
Maya backed away.
“I know exactly what I saw.”
Eleanor suddenly moved toward the hallway.
Claire noticed immediately.
“Where are you going?”
“My grandchildren are frightened.”
“No.”
Claire pointed toward the dining room doors.
“Stay where the police can see you.”
Eleanor froze.
The front doorbell rang.
Nobody moved.
Then came a hard knock.
“Sheriff’s department.”
Adrian whispered something under his breath.
Charles turned toward him.
Their eyes met.
That silent exchange told Claire more than any confession could have.
They were not worried only about the assault.
They were worried about what the police might find.
Maya crossed the room and unlocked the front door.
Two deputies entered first.
A paramedic team followed them.
Deputy Marcus Reed took one look at the blood on Claire’s face and immediately separated Adrian from the others.
“Sir, step away from her.”
“This is a family disagreement,” Charles said.
Reed did not even look at him.
“I wasn’t speaking to you.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Claire explained what happened.
She identified the shattered plate.
She identified the witnesses.
She explained the argument over her condominium and Eleanor’s demand for monthly payments.
When Reed asked whether she wanted to make a formal statement, Claire answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
Adrian stared at her.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that she was not going to protect him.
The paramedic gently examined the cut beside Claire’s hairline.
“You may need stitches.”
“I’m going to the hospital.”
“That would be my recommendation.”
Then Maya stepped beside Deputy Reed.
“There’s something else.”
Charles’s face changed.
“Maya.”
She ignored him.
“There is a locked room in the basement.”
Reed looked at her.
“What’s inside?”
“I don’t know everything.”
Maya glanced toward Claire.
“But I know they keep documents there.”
“What kind of documents?”
“Financial documents.”
Adrian laughed sharply.
“This is ridiculous.”
Maya continued.
“Some of them have Claire’s name on them.”
Claire slowly lowered the napkin.
“My name?”
Maya nodded.
“And there are copies of her signature.”
Nobody moved.
The silence was almost physical.
Claire turned toward Adrian.
He looked away.
Deputy Reed asked Maya how she knew this.
“My husband, Nathan, made me help organize boxes last year.”
Nathan, Adrian’s younger brother, had been absent from dinner.
Claire suddenly wondered why.
Maya’s voice dropped.
“He told me never to talk about what I saw.”
“What did you see?” Claire asked.
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“A property transfer.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“For what property?”
Maya stared directly at her.
“Your condominium.”
Before Claire could respond, a deputy came running from the rear hallway.
“Sergeant.”
Everyone turned.
The deputy held a small metal box.
“We found this behind a false panel near the basement stairs.”
Charles closed his eyes.
The deputy opened the box.
Inside were passports.
Bank statements.
Several company seals.
And a notarized document bearing Claire’s name.
Claire stepped closer.
At the top of the page were the words:
TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP.
Beneath them was her condominium address.
And at the bottom was a signature that looked almost exactly like hers.
Except Claire had never signed it.
She looked at Adrian.
His face had gone completely white.
And Claire suddenly understood why the family had been so confident Eleanor would be moving into her home.
They had never planned to persuade her.
May you like
They had planned to steal it.
