Chapter 13 - DANIEL ROSS

Maya stared at her brother’s file for almost an hour.
Daniel had been thirty-two when he died.
Police called it an accident.
His vehicle left a mountain road during heavy rain.
No other vehicle was found.
Maya had accepted the explanation.
Nathan had comforted her through the funeral.
Eleanor had sent flowers.
Charles had paid for catering.
Now every gesture felt monstrous.
“Why would Charles care about Daniel?”
Rebecca turned through the documents.
Daniel had worked as an external auditor.
One year before his death, his firm reviewed several Mercer companies.
He had discovered inconsistencies.
Large transfers without supporting invoices.
Loans between shell corporations.
Unusual insurance arrangements.
Maya whispered.
“He found the fraud.”
Claire looked at her.
“And he was going to expose it.”
Detective Reed was careful.
“We do not yet know that his death was caused intentionally.”
But everyone understood why the old case was being reopened.
Records showed Daniel had scheduled a meeting with federal investigators.
He died four days before it occurred.
Thomas Hale had received money from Charles.
Then the payment disappeared into an account controlled by Vivian.
The same trio surrounding Claire’s brake sabotage.
Maya cried quietly.
Nathan was brought in for questioning.
When detectives mentioned Daniel Ross, his reaction was immediate.
He asked for a lawyer.
That response answered more than words could.
Later, Nathan agreed to speak.
He admitted hearing Charles and Eleanor discuss Daniel years earlier.
He claimed he never knew they planned to harm him.
But after the crash, Nathan began to suspect.
“Why didn’t you tell Maya?” Reed asked.
Nathan looked destroyed.
“Because I knew she would leave me.”
Maya watched the recorded interview from another room.
She whispered.
“I should have.”
Claire took her hand.
Nathan continued.
He admitted marrying Maya despite knowing his father might have been involved in her brother’s death.
He told himself suspicion was not proof.
Then each year he buried the truth deeper.
When Maya later questioned missing money, Nathan struck her because he feared she was beginning to uncover everything.
The conspiracy was no longer about greed.
It had become generational.
Every lie required another.
Every crime demanded silence.
Every person who questioned the family became a threat.
Investigators searched Hale’s financial history.
They found payments surrounding Daniel’s death.
They also found payments near another event.
Five years earlier, a Mercer accountant named William Price had disappeared after resigning unexpectedly.
His family believed he moved abroad.
But investigators found no evidence he ever left the United States.
Then police searched the Sacramento storage unit again.
Behind several boxes was a locked metal cabinet.
Inside were personal belongings.
Daniel Ross’s old company identification card.
William Price’s watch.
And three envelopes labeled with dates.
The final envelope carried Claire’s name.
The date written beneath it was next month.
Maya stared at Claire.
Claire slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed photograph of her.
A map of Highway 1.
And a handwritten note.
FRIDAY.
LATE.
COAST ROAD.
NO CAMERAS.
Whatever Eleanor’s family had planned for Claire was not over.
May you like
It had already been scheduled.
