Chapter 14 - THE COAST ROAD

Police believed the note described a future attempt to stage Claire’s death as a traffic accident.

The date fell on the weekend Claire and Adrian were supposed to attend an anniversary dinner in Carmel.

Adrian had arranged the trip months earlier.

Claire remembered him insisting they drive instead of fly.

At the time, she thought it was romantic.

Now she understood.

The route included long stretches of isolated coastal highway.

Few cameras.

Steep cliffs.

Dark water below.

Detective Reed interviewed Adrian again.

His reaction appeared genuine.

He claimed he knew nothing about the envelope.

Then prosecutors showed him the map.

Adrian began shaking.

“My mother planned the anniversary.”

Claire watched from behind the observation glass.

Reed asked.

“Did she choose the hotel?”

“Yes.”

“The route?”

“She suggested it.”

“Did she insist Claire drive?”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“Yes.”

Reed leaned closer.

“Why?”

Adrian whispered.

“She said I should drink at dinner.”

Claire felt sick.

The intended story became obvious.

Claire would drive.

Adrian would drink.

Something would happen to the car.

And if Claire died while Adrian survived, grief would make him sympathetic rather than suspicious.

But the plan had another weakness.

Adrian was supposed to be inside the same vehicle.

Unless they expected him to leave it before the crash.

Investigators searched messages between Eleanor and Hale.

One recovered fragment read:

HE GETS OUT AT THE VIEWPOINT.

Claire stared at the words.

Adrian had been part of the escape plan.

Perhaps knowingly.

Perhaps not.

Reed asked him about it.

Adrian cried.

He claimed Eleanor had told him she wanted to surprise Claire with anniversary photographs at a scenic viewpoint.

She instructed Adrian to step out first and persuade Claire to reposition the car.

Then Hale would supposedly arrive as the photographer.

It sounded absurd.

Yet that was often how manipulation worked.

A harmless explanation around one step.

Another harmless explanation around the next.

Until someone was dead.

Claire no longer cared whether Adrian had understood every detail.

He had already tolerated enough danger to make intent almost irrelevant.

The investigation expanded.

Federal agents took control of the financial case.

Prosecutors began preparing multiple charges.

Fraud.

Identity theft.

Conspiracy.

Evidence tampering.

Domestic assault.

Potential attempted murder charges remained under review.

Then Charles made his move.

He offered full cooperation.

His price?

Immunity for Eleanor.

Claire laughed when Rebecca told her.

“He still protects her.”

“Apparently.”

“After everything?”

Rebecca gave Claire a long look.

“Some marriages are partnerships.”

Claire understood.

Charles and Eleanor had spent decades building their empire together.

The crimes were merely another shared asset.

Prosecutors rejected the deal.

That same night, Charles suffered what jail staff initially believed was a medical emergency.

During transport to a hospital, the ambulance was forced to stop because another vehicle blocked the road.

A masked man attempted to open the rear doors.

Deputies fired a warning shot.

The man fled.

Police later recovered the abandoned vehicle.

Inside were fingerprints.

They belonged to Thomas Hale.

But Hale was supposed to be in federal custody.

When agents checked his detention unit, they found another prisoner wearing Hale’s uniform.

Hale had escaped.

May you like

And no one knew how long he had been gone.
