Chapter 15 - THE ESCAPE

Thomas Hale’s escape caused panic across three agencies.

He had not simply slipped out of custody.

Someone had helped him.

Security footage showed a maintenance vehicle entering a restricted transfer area.

The driver used legitimate credentials belonging to a contractor.

Those credentials had been stolen forty-eight hours earlier.

Hale changed clothing and left through a service gate.

The operation had been planned.

Claire was moved immediately.

Her hotel was no longer considered secure.

Federal agents relocated her to a protected residence.

Maya and her children received security as well.

Rebecca worked remotely.

For the first time in weeks, Claire had nowhere to go.

No office.

No condo.

No courtroom.

Nothing but time.

And memories.

She thought about the dinner.

The plate.

The blood.

The moment she called 911.

Everything had changed because she refused to stay silent for one more minute.

Maya joined her late that evening.

“I keep thinking about Daniel.”

Claire knew.

“What if I had asked more questions?”

“You were grieving.”

“What if Nathan knew more?”

“He probably did.”

Maya looked toward the dark window.

“I want him to spend the rest of his life remembering that I testified.”

Claire understood that too.

The next morning, Hale contacted Eleanor’s attorney.

He wanted money.

He threatened to release recordings proving Eleanor had ordered “everything.”

The attorney immediately informed prosecutors.

A controlled negotiation began.

Hale demanded five million dollars and transportation out of the country.

Agents traced the call unsuccessfully.

But Hale made another mistake.

He sent a sample recording.

Eleanor’s voice was clear.

“The coast road is cleaner than the garage.”

Then Charles.

“No more mistakes.”

Then Hale.

“And Adrian?”

Eleanor answered.

“He only needs to believe he survived an accident.”

Claire listened twice.

Adrian had apparently not known the final plan.

That fact changed nothing between them.

But legally, it mattered.

Prosecutors now had direct evidence against Eleanor and Charles.

They arranged a fake payment drop.

Hale never appeared.

Instead, he sent instructions for another location.

Then another.

He was testing surveillance.

Hours passed.

Near midnight, agents received an alert from Claire’s condominium building.

Someone had entered her unit using a cloned access card.

Police rushed upstairs.

The apartment was empty.

But Claire’s security camera recorded a man entering the study.

Thomas Hale.

He spent only three minutes inside.

He removed something from behind the built-in bookcase.

Then left.

Claire stared at the footage.

“What was behind that wall?”

She had no idea.

Police searched the area.

Behind a removable panel, they found an old envelope.

It belonged to Claire’s father.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

CLAIRE.

PRIVATE.

OPEN IF THE MERCERS EVER ASK ABOUT THE TRUST.

Claire stared at it in disbelief.

Her father had died before she married Adrian.

Yet somehow he had known the Mercer name.

Her hands trembled as she opened the letter.

The first sentence made her sit down.
