Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND WHO WANTED TO TALK

Adrian sent Claire an address fifteen minutes later.
It belonged to a closed marina outside Sausalito.
Deputy Reed immediately told her not to go.
Claire agreed.
She had already learned what happened when she entered rooms controlled by Adrian’s family.
Instead, Reed arranged surveillance.
Claire replied to Adrian with four words.
I WILL COME ALONE.
She did not.
Three unmarked vehicles positioned themselves around the marina.
Claire wore a small recording device beneath her jacket.
Reed remained two minutes away.
Maya stayed at the police station with her children.
At 2:13 in the morning, Claire stepped into an abandoned boat office overlooking the dark water.
Adrian was waiting.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
His hair was disordered.
He looked less like the confident man who had struck her hours earlier and more like a frightened child.
His eyes immediately moved toward her stitches.
Something resembling guilt crossed his face.
“Claire.”
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“I shouldn’t have hit you.”
“No.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
“I lost control.”
“You made a choice.”
Adrian looked away.
Claire kept several feet between them.
“What did your father do?”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Everything.”
Claire waited.
“My father destroyed the family business.”
“How?”
“Bad investments.”
“Loans.”
“Gambling on commercial developments that never happened.”
“How much?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Six point eight million.”
Claire almost smiled.
Even Maya had not known the real number.
“So you decided I would repay it.”
“No.”
Adrian stepped closer.
Claire immediately stepped back.
He stopped.
“My father decided.”
“And you helped.”
Silence.
That was answer enough.
Claire asked about the forged condominium transfer.
Adrian admitted Charles had prepared it.
“Did you sign anything?”
“No.”
“Did Nathan?”
Adrian looked toward the windows.
“I think so.”
“What about my trust?”
His face changed.
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“What did you do?”
“I told my father it existed.”
“Why?”
“I was desperate.”
Claire felt something inside her finally detach from the man standing before her.
Adrian had always accused her of being cold.
Now she understood what emotional clarity actually felt like.
“How much of my money did you promise him?”
Adrian whispered.
“Enough to keep the company alive.”
Claire stared.
“My father worked forty years to build that trust.”
“I know.”
“He created it before I ever met you.”
“I know.”
“And you promised it to your family.”
“I thought we would repay it.”
Claire almost laughed.
Then she asked the question she had been avoiding.
“Who entered my condo tonight?”
Adrian’s head lifted.
“Nathan.”
“Why?”
“He needed the trust documents.”
“For your father?”
“No.”
Adrian looked genuinely frightened now.
“For himself.”
Claire frowned.
Adrian explained that Nathan had discovered Charles’s fraud months earlier.
Instead of exposing it, he began copying records.
Nathan intended to blackmail his own family.
Then he discovered Claire’s trust.
“He thinks there’s a way to redirect money through the Mercer Legacy Fund.”
“There isn’t.”
“He believes there is.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire studied Adrian.
Something did not fit.
“If Nathan is your enemy now, why did you warn him before police arrived?”
Adrian froze.
Claire had guessed.
His expression confirmed it.
“You called him.”
Adrian said nothing.
“You told him to run.”
“I was trying to keep him from doing something stupid.”
“He broke into my home.”
“I didn’t know he would.”
Claire took another step backward.
“Why did you ask me here?”
Adrian’s face hardened.
The frightened husband disappeared.
Something colder replaced him.
“I need you to tell police the plate slipped.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“You need to say you were angry.”
“That you stood up.”
“That I grabbed the plate and it accidentally hit you.”
Claire finally understood.
This was not a confession.
It was another negotiation.
“You brought me here to change my statement.”
“If I’m charged with assault, my career is finished.”
Claire almost whispered.
“You should have considered that before you attacked me.”
Adrian’s expression twisted.
“You don’t understand what I’m trying to save.”
“No.”
Claire looked directly at him.
“You don’t understand what you already destroyed.”
Then headlights appeared outside.
Adrian turned toward the windows.
His face went pale.
“That isn’t the police.”
A black SUV stopped beside the marina.
The driver’s door opened.
Nathan stepped out.
May you like
And in his hand was Claire’s stolen blue folder.
