Chapter 9 - THE CONTRACT

The agreement was not legally enforceable.
Rebecca made that clear immediately.
Adrian could not give away Claire’s trust.
He could not transfer assets he did not own.
But legality was no longer the most important question.
Intent was.
Why had Adrian signed a document discussing Claire’s death six months before she discovered the insurance policy?
Investigators confronted him.
At first, Adrian refused to answer.
Then his attorney arrived.
After three hours, he changed his story.
Adrian claimed Charles had told him the clause was standard estate-planning language.
Nobody believed him.
Especially Claire.
She asked to see Adrian.
Rebecca advised against it.
Claire insisted.
The meeting took place at the county detention facility with investigators observing.
Adrian looked exhausted.
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other through the glass.
Claire lifted the phone.
Adrian did the same.
“Did you know they cut my brakes?”
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes briefly.
“When?”
“The next day.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I confronted my father.”
“You said nothing to me.”
“He swore it was only meant to scare you.”
Claire stared.
“Cutting a brake line is not intimidation.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew it then.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.
Claire felt nothing.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?”
“My father said the family would collapse.”
“So you protected him.”
“I thought I could control it.”
“You couldn’t even control yourself at dinner.”
Adrian flinched.
Claire continued.
“Did you know about the insurance policy?”
“Yes.”
“Did you approve it?”
“At first.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“What does that mean?”
“My mother said it was financial protection.”
“For whom?”
“The family.”
Claire laughed once.
A small, empty sound.
“So my death was financial protection.”
“I never wanted you dead.”
“Yet you signed paperwork benefiting from it.”
“I canceled everything.”
“No.”
“You hid everything.”
Adrian leaned closer to the glass.
“I loved you.”
Claire studied him.
Perhaps he believed that.
Perhaps he had convinced himself love could coexist with betrayal, theft, concealment, intimidation, and violence.
Claire no longer needed to decide.
“The version of love you offered me was ownership.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then Claire asked about the contract.
“Why does it mention my trust after my death?”
Adrian remained silent.
“Answer me.”
“My father wanted assurance.”
“Of what?”
“That if something happened to you, I would use the inheritance to stabilize the company.”
Claire stared.
Something happened.
Those words were doing enormous work.
“Did your father ever discuss causing that ‘something’?”
“No.”
“Your mother?”
Adrian hesitated.
Claire noticed.
“What did Eleanor say?”
He shook his head.
“Adrian.”
“She was angry.”
“When?”
“After the brake incident.”
Claire could barely believe what she was hearing.
“What did she say?”
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
“She said Dad had failed because he was too afraid to finish what he started.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Adrian whispered.
“I told her never to touch you.”
Claire’s voice became almost inaudible.
“And then?”
“She laughed.”
“What did she say?”
Adrian hesitated again.
Then answered.
“She said she wouldn’t need to.”
Before Claire could ask why, an investigator entered the room.
He ended the interview immediately.
Outside, Rebecca was waiting.
Her face was pale.
“What happened?”
Rebecca handed Claire a photograph.
It showed a man Claire recognized.
Thomas Hale.
The private driver Eleanor had tried for months to convince Claire to hire.
Rebecca spoke quietly.
“Police searched his apartment.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
