Chapter 11 - Hale Center

The cars outside belonged to federal investigators.
For once, that was good news.
Naomi had quietly contacted an assistant U.S. attorney after finding the second ledger.
The government already had an open investigation into Hale Medical Research.
They simply hadn’t known where the missing ledger was.
Now they did.
And suddenly my father’s disappearance looked much less like an isolated missing-person case.
By morning, warrants were being prepared.
But there was one problem.
The primary server containing Hale Fertility’s historical laboratory chain-of-custody records was scheduled for replacement that weekend.
If someone destroyed it before investigators arrived, M-17 might become much harder to prove.
Naomi wanted me nowhere near the clinic.
Luka agreed.
I didn’t.
Ryan had stolen seven years of my life.
He had controlled my medical decisions.
He had lied about my pregnancy.
I wasn’t staying hidden while other people uncovered my own story.
Two hours later, I walked into Hale Fertility wearing a recording device under my blouse.
Luka waited across the street with investigators.
I had one job.
Keep Vanessa talking.
She found me inside her father’s office.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
“Neither should you.”
Vanessa locked the door.
Her face was pale.
“You think Luka is saving you?”
“I think my husband left me in a hospital with his mistress.”
“You still don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Ryan was supposed to keep you calm.”
“Keep me calm?”
“Keep you trusting the clinic.”
There it was.
A confession.
Small.
But real.
I continued.
“Why me?”
Vanessa stared at me.
“Because your father stole evidence.”
“And because Luka Moretti’s sample was worth more than anyone else’s in the program.”
“Why?”
“The Moretti family trust.”
My heart jumped.
“What about it?”
“If Luka had a biological child, certain ownership provisions changed.”
I stared at her.
They intended to create a child connected to Luka.
Then use that child as leverage.
Grace.
My daughter had been planned as a financial weapon.
I nearly lost control.
“What was Ryan supposed to get?”
“Ten million dollars if the settlement worked.”
My stomach turned.
“And you?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Ryan.”
The office door suddenly opened.
Dr. Calvin Hale stood there.
His face went white when he saw me.
Then he noticed the tiny wire near my collar.
“Vanessa.”
Her eyes dropped.
She realized what I had done.
Dr. Hale lunged toward the desk.
Not toward me.
Toward a red button beneath it.
An alarm.
Before he could press it, the door crashed open.
Federal agents flooded the room.
Luka entered behind them.
Dr. Hale looked at him with pure hatred.
“You have no idea what Robert did.”
Luka stepped closer.
“Then tell me.”
Hale smiled.
“Robert switched M-17 himself.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
May you like
Hale looked directly at me.
“Your father is the reason nobody knows who your baby’s father really is.”
