Chapter 15 - The Father I Buried

My father came home forty-eight hours later.

A government SUV stopped outside the secure residence where Grace and I were staying.

The rear door opened.

Robert Carter stepped out.

I forgot every question I wanted to ask.

I ran to him.

He wrapped his arms around me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

I was twenty-five years old.

I had just become a mother.

But in that moment, I was fourteen again, holding onto my father after my mother’s funeral.

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I missed you every day.”

His voice broke.

“I know.”

Then I placed Grace in his arms.

Dad cried immediately.

“She looks like you.”

“She looks like somebody.”

He understood.

We sat together inside.

Luka stayed near the doorway.

Dad looked at him.

“You kept your promise.”

“So far.”

Then Dad finally told me everything.

He had discovered the M-17 plan shortly before my IVF procedure.

Hale intended to use Luka’s genetic material.

Ryan discovered the plan later than Vanessa believed.

According to Dad, Ryan had helped create the system but had never expected Hale to target his own wife.

The irony was almost unbearable.

The architect had become the victim of his own machine.

“What did you do?”

“I replaced M-17 before your procedure.”

“With whose sample?”

Dad looked at me.

“Ryan’s.”

My breath left my body.

Luka closed his eyes.

The answer changed everything.

Grace was probably Ryan’s biological daughter.

The daughter he had abandoned without touching.

The daughter he had walked past to leave with Vanessa.

“Why didn’t you stop the procedure completely?”

“I tried.”

“Hale moved the schedule.”

“By the time I learned the transfer was happening, I had hours.”

“The safest option was to restore the sample that should have been used in the first place.”

“Ryan’s.”

I felt sick.

“So Grace was conceived exactly the way I thought she was.”

“Yes.”

“Except everyone lied around me.”

Dad lowered his head.

“Yes.”

I stood.

Anger shook through me.

“You don’t get to call what you did protection.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You disappeared.”

“To keep them from finding you through me.”

“And Ryan?”

Dad’s expression hardened.

“Ryan discovered the switch on the morning Grace was born.”

“How?”

“He accessed a preliminary hospital report.”

“The blood type suggested Luka might not be the father.”

“He contacted Hale.”

“Hale admitted the chain had been compromised.”

Ryan realized the truth.

He knew Grace could be his.

And he left anyway.

Dad reached into his jacket.

“There is something worse.”

He placed a second sealed envelope beside Daniel’s.

“What?”

“This one contains the chain-of-custody evidence.”

“It proves Ryan’s sample wasn’t simply substituted.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

Dad’s next words explained why Ryan had begged me not to open anything.

“Ryan personally delivered his original sample to Hale under Luka Moretti’s identification code.”

“He helped create the false M-17 record.”

“If Grace’s DNA matches Ryan, it doesn’t just prove he’s her father.”

“It proves he participated in the fraud.”
