Chapter 16 - The Last Envelope

For the first time, I understood why Ryan was terrified.

The DNA result was not merely personal.

It was evidence.

Years earlier, Ryan had handled the creation of false chain-of-custody documents for M-17.

His own genetic sample had briefly been logged under Luka’s code during a test run designed to prove Hale’s system could bypass internal controls.

Robert had found that forgotten sample in storage.

When he switched the planned procedure, he used the one sample that should never have existed.

Ryan’s own DNA.

Hale couldn’t report the switch without exposing the fraudulent record.

Ryan couldn’t report it without exposing himself.

Dad had turned their crime into a trap.

I stared at him.

“You planned all of this?”

“I planned to expose them.”

“I never planned for you to be caught inside it.”

“But I was.”

“I know.”

He looked older than he had five minutes earlier.

“I will spend the rest of my life regretting that.”

The next morning, Ryan requested a meeting.

My attorney advised against it.

I agreed anyway.

We sat across from each other in a monitored conference room.

Ryan stared at Grace through the glass partition.

“You named her.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Grace.”

His face tightened.

“My mother’s middle name.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“My mother’s name.”

The distinction mattered.

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“Can I hold her?”

“No.”

He flinched.

For years, I had been afraid of disappointing him.

Now his disappointment felt strangely small.

“Claire, I made horrible choices.”

“Yes.”

“But I didn’t know Hale was going to use Luka’s sample on you until it was already happening.”

“You helped build the system that allowed him to do it.”

Ryan had no answer.

“You selected other families.”

“I handled paperwork.”

“You paid Rachel’s husband.”

His face changed.

“How do you know about Rachel?”

That told me enough.

I placed the sealed envelope on the table.

Ryan stared at it.

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“You already know I’m probably Grace’s father.”

“Then you should want proof.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand what Robert put in there.”

“I understand perfectly.”

His eyes filled with panic.

“Claire, if the government connects my DNA to the original false M-17 record, they’ll say I built the scheme.”

“Did you?”

“I was twenty-four.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Hale told me nobody would be hurt.”

I almost laughed.

“Seventeen families were manipulated.”

“I didn’t know how far it would go.”

“You knew enough to take the money.”

He slammed his palms against the table.

“I loved you.”

Silence followed.

There it was.

The sentence I had once wanted more than anything.

Now it sounded pathetic.

“You loved me?”

“Yes.”

I leaned forward.

“Then why did you walk away from me and Grace?”

Ryan looked through the glass.

His answer was almost inaudible.

“Because when I realized she might actually be mine, I knew the DNA could destroy me.”

I stared at him.

May you like

He had abandoned his daughter not because he believed she belonged to another man.

He abandoned her because she might prove his guilt.
