Chapter 18 - When Ryan Fell

Ryan’s attorneys immediately tried to stop the hearing.
It was too late.
The result had entered the record.
The judge issued an order preventing Ryan from accessing Grace’s medical information without court approval.
He was prohibited from removing records.
He was prohibited from contacting hospital personnel.
He was prohibited from approaching me outside supervised legal channels.
The federal investigators waiting outside took over from there.
Dr. Hale was arrested that afternoon on charges connected to financial fraud, falsified medical records, and conspiracy.
Ryan was taken into federal custody for questioning and later charged as the investigation expanded.
Vanessa received no promise of immunity.
Cooperation was not forgiveness.
It simply meant she had finally chosen which sinking ship she wanted to leave.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
I ignored them.
Luka walked beside me.
For the first time since the hospital, he looked almost relaxed.
“You’re free.”
I shook my head.
“Not yet.”
He understood.
Freedom wasn’t a court order.
It wasn’t Ryan being taken away.
It was learning how to live without measuring every decision against what Ryan wanted.
At the car, I turned toward Luka.
“There’s something we need to fix.”
He knew immediately.
“The certificate.”
“Yes.”
His name remained on the preliminary paperwork.
Luka nodded.
“I already told Naomi to prepare the correction.”
“You signed without asking me.”
“I did.”
“I was furious.”
“You had every right to be.”
I studied him.
“Why did you do it?”
He looked toward the courthouse where Ryan had disappeared.
“Because I knew the people behind M-17 were watching.”
“A child connected to me would have immediate protection from my family, my attorneys, and every security resource I had.”
“You made yourself the target.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Luka was silent for a moment.
Then he smiled faintly.
“Your father saved my life in Room 614.”
“I owed him.”
I shook my head.
“That isn’t enough.”
“No.”
His eyes moved toward Grace.
“It wasn’t.”
He leaned closer to the infant carrier.
Grace opened her eyes.
Luka smiled.
The terrifying tattooed stranger suddenly looked almost gentle.
“I spent seven years knowing someone stole something from me that could someday create a child without my consent.”
“When I saw her, I thought there was a chance she was mine.”
“And for about thirty seconds…”
His voice softened.
“I was terrified.”
“Then Ryan walked away.”
Luka looked at me.
“So I made a decision.”
“What decision?”
“That whoever her biological father turned out to be, she would never be treated like something disposable.”
I looked at Grace.
Then at the man who had stood where her father refused to stand.
“You’re not her father.”
“I know.”
“But maybe…”
I hesitated.
May you like
“You can be Uncle Luka.”
For the first time, Luka Moretti actually laughed.
