Chapter 13 - The Man Ryan Feared

Daniel Mercer was sixty-three years old and looked like someone who had spent his entire life listening to powerful men lie.
He invited us into his office without surprise.
“I wondered when Robert’s daughter would arrive.”
I stopped.
“You’ve spoken to my father?”
“Three days ago.”
My eyes filled.
“Where is he?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not until the government moves him.”
I hated that answer.
But at least Dad was alive.
Daniel opened a safe behind his desk.
Inside was a white envelope.
My name was written across it.
He did not hand it to me.
“Your father made me promise this would remain sealed until Ryan Bennett was formally confronted.”
“Why?”
“Because Ryan knows what’s inside.”
I stared at the envelope.
“Then tell me what he thinks is inside.”
Daniel leaned back.
“Eight years ago, Ryan worked for a consulting firm that audited Hale Medical.”
“He discovered irregularities.”
“For about twenty-four hours, he considered reporting them.”
“What changed?”
“Money.”
Of course.
“Hale paid him.”
“Then Ryan began helping conceal the fraud.”
“Later, he began participating in it.”
Daniel placed another file on the desk.
“I investigated Ryan for financial crimes.”
“He agreed to cooperate.”
“Then every key witness suddenly withdrew.”
“Evidence disappeared.”
“The case collapsed.”
“Your father later discovered Ryan had become more valuable to Hale than any doctor.”
“Why?”
“Because Ryan understood contracts, trusts, insurance, inheritance law, and how to identify wealthy families vulnerable to pressure.”
My stomach tightened.
“He chose victims.”
Daniel nodded.
“And he chose you.”
I looked at Grace.
“Why marry me?”
“To reach Robert.”
“And later because Robert discovered M-17.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry.”
“Was any of it real?”
He didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Only Ryan knew.
And I no longer trusted any answer Ryan could give.
Daniel finally handed me the sealed envelope.
“You can open this whenever you choose.”
I touched it.
Ryan’s voice suddenly came from the doorway.
“Don’t.”
Everyone turned.
Ryan stood there.
His hair was disheveled.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
For the first time, he looked like a man whose world had finally begun collapsing.
Two federal agents appeared behind him.
Daniel remained seated.
“You always did have terrible timing, Ryan.”
Ryan ignored him.
His eyes stayed on the envelope in my hands.
“Claire.”
His voice cracked.
“Please.”
I had never heard him say that word to me before.
Please.
Not when I was pregnant.
Not when I was afraid.
Not when he left me at the hospital.
Now he was begging.
“What’s in it?”
Ryan shook his head.
“You don’t want to know.”
I looked at him.
“You’re wrong.”
He took one desperate step forward.
“If you open that envelope, everything is over.”
I held it tighter.
“For who?”
Ryan’s eyes filled with something I had never seen before.
May you like
Defeat.
“For me.”
