Chapter 9 - The Wall Behind the Nursery

Luka’s security team met Ryan before he reached my floor.
Police arrived shortly afterward.
Ryan claimed he was retrieving personal belongings.
That explanation might have worked if the toolbox hadn’t contained a small electronic scanner, two screwdrivers, a wall camera detector, and a handwritten diagram of our apartment.
The diagram showed one room circled.
Grace’s nursery.
Police questioned him in the lobby.
Ryan kept insisting everything belonged to him because his name was still on the lease.
Then one officer discovered something written on the diagram.
WEST WALL.
SECOND LEDGER.
My father’s words returned immediately.
Ryan isn’t looking for M-17 itself.
He is looking for the second ledger.
I walked into the nursery.
The west wall looked ordinary.
White paint.
Wooden molding.
A shelf filled with stuffed animals.
Luka inspected the baseboard.
One piece was newer than the others.
Ryan had renovated the nursery himself.
At least that was what he told me.
Luka removed two screws.
Behind the molding was a narrow hollow.
Inside was a plastic evidence pouch.
My father had hidden it inside my home.
Maybe before he disappeared.
Maybe while Ryan slept down the hallway.
Naomi opened it carefully.
A small notebook lay inside.
Every page contained names, dates, sample codes, and payment amounts.
Near the back were three names I recognized.
Dr. Calvin Hale.
Vanessa Hale.
Ryan Bennett.
Beside Ryan’s name was a notation.
RECRUITER / FINANCIAL COORDINATOR.
My stomach dropped.
“Recruiter?”
Luka read silently.
Then he turned the page.
There were women’s names.
Twelve of them.
Some had notes beside them.
Married.
IVF.
Legal father unaware.
Inheritance potential.
My knees weakened.
“Oh my God.”
Naomi looked horrified.
Ryan hadn’t simply helped falsify money.
He had helped identify couples.
Women.
Families.
People whose desperation for children made them easy to manipulate.
My name was number seventeen.
CLAIRE CARTER BENNETT.
Beside it were four words.
M-17.
CONTROL CASE.
DO NOT TERMINATE.
I felt sick.
“What does control case mean?”
Nobody answered.
Then Luka turned the final page.
There was an address in Queens.
A woman’s name appeared beside it.
Rachel Lawson.
M-12.
Underneath, Dad had written:
SHE KNOWS WHAT RYAN DID.
Thirty minutes later, Naomi found Rachel’s phone number.
When I called, a woman answered.
I introduced myself.
Silence followed.
Then I said Ryan’s name.
Rachel began crying.
“You’re Claire.”
“Yes.”
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
My heart pounded.
“How do you know me?”
“Because your husband was at the clinic the night they switched my husband’s sample.”
She inhaled shakily.
“And he wasn’t alone.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
May you like
Rachel’s answer changed everything.
“He was with your father.”
