Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DOOR

For three unbearable seconds, Marcus Thorne did nothing.

He stood inside the doorway of the private hospital suite, one hand still gripping the brass handle, his black tuxedo perfectly tailored, his face completely unreadable.

Broken crystal glittered across the marble floor.

Khloe lay curled beside the table, one arm wrapped around her stomach and the other pressed against the floor as she struggled to breathe.

Isabella Rossi stood above her in a crimson gown.

The scene should have been impossible to misunderstand.

Yet Isabella understood Marcus better than anyone in that room.

She knew where his weaknesses lived.

She turned toward him, and the cruelty vanished from her expression so quickly that Elaine Parker almost doubted what she had witnessed.

“Marcus,” Isabella whispered.

Tears filled her eyes.

“She attacked me.”

Elaine stared at her.

“What?”

Isabella pressed one hand against her shoulder as though she had been injured.

“She became hysterical. I tried to calm her down, but she shoved me. She lost her balance and fell.”

Khloe tried to speak.

Only a strained gasp escaped her.

Marcus finally moved.

He crossed the room and dropped to his knees beside his wife.

“Khloe.”

She flinched when he touched her.

That tiny reaction struck him harder than any accusation could have.

“Don’t move,” he said. “An emergency team is coming.”

“You saw her,” Khloe whispered.

Her voice was so weak Elaine had to lean forward to hear it.

“You saw what she did.”

Marcus looked at Isabella.

For a moment, something dangerous appeared in his eyes.

Then Isabella spoke again.

“You know how unstable she’s been.”

The words changed the room.

Elaine saw it happen.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Khloe’s face went still.

Isabella had not invented that sentence.

She had repeated something she had heard before.

Something discussed privately.

Khloe stared at her husband.

“You told her that?”

“Khloe, this is not the time.”

“You told her I was unstable?”

“I said you were under stress.”

“To her?”

Elaine moved toward the wall-mounted emergency panel.

Before she could press it, the suite doors slammed open again.

Dr. Nathaniel Hale entered with two nurses and three hospital security officers behind him.

At sixty-two, Nathaniel was tall, silver-haired, and known throughout Chicago as one of the most powerful medical executives in the country.

To Khloe, he had always been Uncle Nathan.

To everyone else, he was the chairman of Hale Medical Group, the organization that owned the hospital.

He took one look at Khloe on the floor.

His face changed.

“Get her into trauma assessment now.”

The nurses rushed forward.

One security officer approached Isabella.

She stepped back.

“Don’t touch me. This is a misunderstanding.”

Nathaniel ignored her.

He knelt beside Khloe.

“Can you hear me?”

Khloe nodded.

“My baby.”

“We’re checking both of you.”

“They need the truth.”

“They’ll have it.”

Nathaniel looked toward the security supervisor.

“Lock down this floor.”

Marcus rose.

“Nathaniel, there’s no reason to create a scene.”

Nathaniel turned slowly.

“My pregnant niece is lying on the floor of a suite owned by my hospital.”

His voice remained calm.

That calmness made it more frightening.

“There is already a scene.”

Isabella lifted her chin.

“Khloe fell after attacking me. Elaine walked in afterward. She didn’t see how it began.”

Elaine took a step forward.

“I heard you threatening her.”

Isabella’s eyes narrowed.

“You heard an argument.”

“I saw you standing over her.”

“You saw what you wanted to see.”

Nathaniel looked at the small black security camera above the suite entrance.

“No,” he said. “We’ll see exactly what happened.”

The color drained from Isabella’s face.

Marcus followed Nathaniel’s gaze.

The camera had been installed after a medication theft six months earlier. Most guests assumed it monitored only the hallway.

They were wrong.

Its wide-angle lens covered the entrance and most of the suite.

Isabella recovered quickly.

“Hospital cameras don’t record inside private treatment rooms. That would violate privacy law.”

Nathaniel stood.

“This suite is not a treatment room. It is a hospitality suite used for donors and administrative guests.”

He turned to security.

“Retrieve the footage.”

The supervisor hesitated.

“Sir, the camera system on this floor went offline at nine forty-two.”

Elaine looked at the clock.

It was nine fifty-one.

Nine minutes.

The exact window of the attack.

Isabella’s lips parted slightly.

Khloe saw it.

So did Nathaniel.

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“Coincidence?” he asked.

The security supervisor shook his head.

“We don’t know yet.”

Nathaniel pointed toward Isabella.

“Do not let her leave.”

“You cannot imprison me,” Isabella snapped.

“No,” Nathaniel replied. “But the police can question you.”

The nurses lifted Khloe onto a stretcher.

Pain twisted through her side.

She reached for Marcus without thinking.

He caught her hand.

For one brief second, he looked terrified.

Then she remembered Isabella’s words.

Smile beside him.

Carry his child.

Disappear when you’re no longer useful.

Khloe pulled her hand away.

Marcus stared at the empty space between them.

The nurses wheeled her out.

As the doors closed, Khloe looked back.

Isabella was no longer pretending to cry.

She was staring at Marcus.

And Marcus was staring at her.

Not like strangers.

Not even like enemies.

Like two people sharing a secret that had just become dangerous.

Inside the trauma room, doctors connected monitors and examined Khloe’s abdomen.

The baby’s heartbeat filled the room.

Fast.

Uneven.

Still alive.

Khloe closed her eyes.

Nathaniel stood beside her, holding her hand.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

Khloe opened her eyes again.

“I think Marcus has been lying to me.”

Nathaniel’s expression remained steady.

“About Isabella?”

“About more than Isabella.”

A nurse entered carrying a tablet.

“Dr. Hale, security recovered a backup recording.”

Nathaniel took it.

“How?”

“The main system was disabled, but the camera uploaded thirty-second fragments to an off-site server before losing connection.”

Khloe’s heart pounded.

Nathaniel pressed play.

The video showed Isabella entering the suite.

It showed Khloe telling her to leave.

It captured every threat.

Every shove.

Every movement.

Then Isabella kicked her.

Nathaniel’s hand tightened around the tablet.

But the footage continued.

After Khloe fell, Isabella crouched beside her and whispered something.

The camera had no clear audio at that distance, but Khloe remembered the words.

Marcus will never choose you.

Then Isabella walked toward the door.

She removed a small device from her purse and pressed a button.

The camera image flickered.

Before the recording ended, another figure appeared in the hallway.

A man in a catering uniform.

He looked directly at Isabella.

Then he nodded.

Nathaniel froze the frame.

Khloe stared at the man’s face.

She knew him.

She had seen him three nights earlier leaving Marcus’s private office.

Marcus had introduced him as a financial consultant.
