Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO CHOSE THE BABY

Dr. Evelyn Shaw had delivered calm news at every appointment.

The baby was healthy.

Khloe’s blood pressure was manageable.

The pain was normal.

The insomnia was normal.

The strange moments of dizziness were normal.

Now every reassurance felt like part of a plan.

“She has had access to me for seven months,” Khloe said.

Elaine nodded.

“And access to the baby.”

Marcus’s face went cold.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I didn’t confirm her identity until tonight.”

“How?”

“Adrian found Rebecca Hale’s sealed records. Lillian survived the first delivery and was transferred under a false name.”

“Who raised her?” Khloe asked.

“Vittorio Rossi’s sister.”

Isabella’s family.

The connection twisted through Khloe’s mind.

“Isabella knew?”

“Not at first. Evelyn used Isabella to get close to Marcus and destabilize your marriage.”

Marcus looked toward the smoke-filled corridor.

“We need to get Khloe off this floor.”

Elaine opened a service map on her phone.

“There’s a maintenance lift behind the surgical storage area.”

They moved through the damaged room.

Marcus supported Khloe with one arm.

Elaine led them to a hidden door.

As she entered a code, Marcus seized her wrist.

“If this is another trap—”

“It isn’t.”

The door opened.

They stepped inside the service lift.

It descended two levels and stopped.

The doors opened onto a dark maintenance tunnel.

Nathaniel and Detective Brooks appeared from the opposite end.

Nathaniel rushed to Khloe.

“You’re hurt.”

“Marcus protected me.”

Nathaniel looked at him, surprised.

Brooks turned toward Elaine.

“You’re under arrest.”

Elaine raised her hands.

“Arrest me after you stop Evelyn.”

“Where is she?”

“In the neonatal research wing.”

Nathaniel frowned.

“That wing has been closed for six years.”

“No,” Elaine said. “It has been hidden for six years.”

They followed the tunnel beneath the hospital.

At the end was a steel door marked ARCHIVE STORAGE.

Nathaniel’s executive code failed.

Elaine entered a different sequence.

The door unlocked.

Beyond it lay a bright laboratory.

Computer servers hummed behind glass walls.

Medical files filled shelves.

Photographs of children were arranged across an illuminated display.

At the center stood Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

She wore a white coat.

Her blond hair was tied back.

She looked almost exactly like Rebecca Hale.

Khloe stopped breathing.

Evelyn looked at her.

“Sister.”

Marcus moved in front of Khloe.

Evelyn smiled.

“Still protecting the asset, Marcus?”

“She is my wife.”

“She is the guardian of your future voting shares.”

“She is my wife.”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Lillian.”

“That name belonged to a baby your family abandoned.”

“We thought you were dead.”

“You accepted a piece of paper.”

“I was nineteen.”

“And Khloe was loved while I was erased.”

Khloe stepped around Marcus.

“I didn’t know.”

“No. You simply received everything.”

“I lost our mother too.”

“You had photographs. Stories. A family name.”

Evelyn’s voice trembled for the first time.

“I had Rossi doctors studying me like an animal because Everett believed my blood might unlock his precious trust.”

Khloe looked at the files.

“What did they do?”

“They tested whether I could produce a compatible heir.”

Marcus stared at her.

“You tried to marry me through Isabella.”

“Isabella believed she would marry you. She never understood she was another tool.”

“And my baby?” Khloe asked.

Evelyn looked at her stomach.

“The child will activate the trust.”

“For whom?”

“For the surviving firstborn Hale daughter.”

Nathaniel shook his head.

“The trust names the guardian of Marcus’s child.”

“That is the version Everett wanted you to find.”

Evelyn touched a keyboard.

A legal document appeared on the screen.

“The original agreement states that control transfers to the eldest living descendant of Daniel Hale after a Thorne-Hale child is born.”

Khloe understood.

“You.”

“Yes.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You manipulated us into having a child so you could take the company.”

“I gave history the ending it owed me.”

“You arranged Isabella’s attack?”

“I told her Khloe planned to expose her affair with you.”

“There was no affair.”

“Isabella believed there was.”

Khloe stared at Evelyn.

“Did you order Mara to drug me?”

“I ordered her to bring you here.”

“The syringe could have killed my child.”

“Your child was never meant to die.”

“But I was?”

Evelyn said nothing.

That silence answered everything.

Nathaniel moved toward her.

“This ends now.”

Evelyn pressed a button.

Steel shutters dropped over the exits.

Brooks drew her weapon.

Evelyn held up a small remote.

“If I release this switch, the servers destroy themselves.”

Marcus looked around.

“What’s on them?”

“Every illegal trial. Every payment. Every official who helped Everett and Vittorio.”

Nathaniel stared at the evidence.

“You could expose the entire network.”

“I intend to.”

“Then give it to federal investigators.”

Evelyn laughed.

“So they can bury it?”

Khloe stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You will publicly transfer guardianship rights connected to the trust.”

“No.”

“Then the evidence disappears, Marcus loses the company and the network kills all of us before sunrise.”

Marcus moved slightly toward the server controls.

Evelyn saw him.

“Don’t.”

A red light activated above the door.

The destruction sequence had begun.

Five minutes appeared on the screen.

Evelyn looked at Khloe.

“Choose quickly, sister.”

Khloe looked around the laboratory.

At the files.

At the photographs.

At the woman who shared her mother’s face.

Then she realized something.

Evelyn had claimed she wanted justice.

But she had not released the evidence.

She had kept it as leverage.

“You don’t want to destroy the network,” Khloe said.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

May you like

“You want to control it.”

The timer continued counting down.
