Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL OF ISABELLA ROSSI

Six months after the attack, Isabella Rossi entered a Chicago courtroom wearing a plain navy suit.
There were no diamonds.
No photographers inside.
No crimson gown.
Khloe sat behind the prosecution table with Marcus beside her.
Baby Daniel remained at home with Rebecca and a pediatric nurse.
He was healthy now.
Smaller than other babies his age, but strong.
Isabella avoided looking at Khloe until the security footage began playing.
The courtroom watched every second.
The threat.
The shove.
The kick.
The false tears when Marcus entered.
Khloe kept her eyes on the screen.
Marcus looked down.
He had seen the video dozens of times during the investigation, but he still could not watch the moment his wife hit the floor.
Isabellaâs attorney argued that Vittorio had emotionally manipulated her.
The prosecution agreed.
Then it argued that manipulation did not erase responsibility.
When Khloe took the witness stand, Isabella finally looked at her.
âMrs. Thorne,â the prosecutor said, âwhat do you remember most clearly?â
Khloe glanced at the jury.
âNot the pain.â
âWhat, then?â
âThe moment she lied.â
The prosecutor waited.
âI was on the floor, protecting my baby. Marcus entered. Isabella looked at him and became another person. She believed if she controlled the story quickly enough, the truth would disappear.â
Khloe looked at Isabella.
âThat is what all of them believed. Vittorio. Everett. Evelyn. Marcus. Nathaniel. They believed the person who controlled the secret controlled everyone around it.â
Marcus absorbed the words.
âWhat do you want the court to understand?â the prosecutor asked.
âThat Isabella was used, but she also made a choice. Both things are true.â
Isabella began to cry.
This time, no one mistook the tears for innocence.
The jury found her guilty of aggravated assault, conspiracy and evidence tampering.
Her cooperation and testimony against Vittorio were considered during sentencing.
She received nine years in prison.
Before officers took her away, she asked permission to speak to Khloe.
The judge allowed one brief exchange.
Isabella stood several feet away.
âI hated you because I thought you had everything.â
Khloe said nothing.
Isabella continued.
âI didnât understand that Marcus had lied to you too.â
âThat would not have made attacking me acceptable.â
âI know.â
âDo you?â
Isabella nodded.
âI do now.â
Khloe studied her.
âI hope you become someone who still understands it when no one is watching.â
Isabella lowered her eyes.
Vittorioâs trial began two weeks later.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Murder conspiracy.
Financial crimes.
Medical trafficking.
Bribery.
Identity manipulation.
The attempted killing of Khloe and her baby.
Adrian Vale testified for three days.
Rebecca testified for two.
Nathaniel admitted surrendering the false key under threat and spending years concealing parts of the truth.
His reputation suffered.
He resigned as chairman of Hale Medical Group.
Rather than fight the decision, he joined the victim-compensation board as an unpaid medical adviser.
Evelyn testified last.
She described being raised under false identities, subjected to testing and taught that love was only another form of leverage.
The jury listened.
Then prosecutors played recordings of Evelyn ordering surveillance on Khloe and directing Mara to bring her to the hidden laboratory.
Evelyn did not deny it.
She received a reduced sentence for her cooperation but remained responsible for her crimes.
Before being taken into custody, she asked to meet Khloe.
They sat across from each other in a courthouse conference room.
Evelyn looked tired.
Without the white coat and controlled smile, she resembled their mother even more.
âDo you hate me?â she asked.
Khloe considered the question.
âNo.â
Evelyn looked surprised.
âI donât trust you,â Khloe continued. âI donât excuse you. But hate would keep you inside my life in another way.â
Evelynâs eyes filled.
âWill you tell Daniel about me?â
âWhen he is old enough, Iâll tell him the truth.â
âAll of it?â
âAll of it.â
Evelyn nodded.
âThatâs more than anyone gave us.â
Vittorio was convicted on every major count.
He received multiple life sentences.
As officers led him away, he looked toward Marcus.
âYou gave away an empire.â
Marcus answered calmly.
âIt was never mine.â
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Were Marcus and Khloe still married?
Would Marcus return to business?
Would Khloe forgive her sister?
Who controlled Thorne Global now?
Khloe stepped toward the microphones.
âMy son does not control the company,â she said. âNeither do I. The trust now belongs to a public foundation, as my father intended.â
A reporter called out.
âMrs. Thorne, is your marriage over?â
Khloe looked at Marcus.
He did not reach for her.
He did not perform for the cameras.
For once, he allowed the decision to belong entirely to her.
âOur marriage as it existed is over,â Khloe said.
The crowd erupted.
She continued.
âWhat comes next will not be decided today, and it will not be decided in public.â
She walked down the courthouse steps.
Marcus followed several paces behind.
May you like
Not beside her.
Not yet.
