Chapter 2 - THE DEAD MAN IN THE HALLWAY

Khloe watched the frozen image until the man’s face blurred.

“That’s him,” she said.

Nathaniel enlarged the frame.

The uniform was ordinary: white jacket, black trousers, hospital catering badge.

The face was not.

Adrian Vale had once served as chief financial officer of Thorne Global, Marcus’s billion-dollar technology and infrastructure empire.

Two years earlier, his private plane had crashed over the mountains of Colorado.

No survivors had been reported.

The company held a memorial.

Marcus delivered the eulogy.

Khloe had sat in the front row beside him.

Now Adrian was standing outside her hospital suite minutes before an attempt was made to disable the security system.

Nathaniel turned to the security officer.

“Send this image to every exit. Nobody leaves without identification.”

The officer hurried out.

Khloe touched her stomach.

The heartbeat monitor continued its rapid rhythm.

“Why would Marcus hide a dead man?”

Nathaniel did not answer immediately.

“Did you ever ask Marcus about Vale’s death?”

“Once. He said Adrian knew too much about corporate rivals and had become paranoid.”

“Did he say what Adrian knew?”

“No.”

Nathaniel’s eyes hardened.

“Then we assume the official story was incomplete.”

The trauma physician entered.

“Mrs. Thorne, the baby’s heartbeat is stabilizing. You have severe bruising but no immediate sign of placental separation. We’re admitting you for continuous observation.”

Khloe exhaled slowly.

The baby was alive.

That was all she could allow herself to feel.

For now.

Nathaniel stepped into the hallway and found Marcus waiting near the elevator.

Isabella had been escorted into a consultation room under security watch.

Elaine stood nearby, speaking with detectives.

Nathaniel stopped in front of Marcus.

“Did you know Adrian Vale was alive?”

Marcus did not react.

That was answer enough.

Nathaniel lowered his voice.

“My niece and her unborn child were attacked tonight. A supposedly dead executive appeared outside the room. Choose your next words carefully.”

Marcus looked toward Khloe’s closed door.

“Is she stable?”

“For the moment.”

“Then let me see her.”

“Answer the question.”

Marcus’s gaze returned to Nathaniel.

“Yes.”

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“You knew.”

“I helped him disappear.”

“Why?”

“Because if I hadn’t, he would have been killed.”

“By whom?”

Marcus glanced at the security camera.

“This hospital is not as secure as you think.”

Nathaniel almost laughed.

“You are in no position to threaten me.”

“I’m warning you.”

“Then warn me with facts.”

Marcus remained silent.

Nathaniel studied him.

“You have one hour. After that, everything I have goes to federal investigators.”

Marcus’s expression shifted.

Not fear.

Calculation.

“You don’t understand what you’re touching.”

“I understand that someone attacked Khloe.”

“This is bigger than Isabella.”

“It became smaller than the whole world the moment she kicked my pregnant niece.”

Marcus looked away.

Across the hall, Detective Lena Brooks approached Isabella’s room.

Before entering, she spoke briefly with Elaine.

Elaine had coordinated hundreds of high-profile events. She was accustomed to drunk donors, jealous spouses, public scandals, and quiet payoffs.

Tonight was different.

She had seen the look on Isabella’s face.

There had been no hesitation.

No panic.

Only intent.

Inside the consultation room, Isabella sat at a polished table.

She had removed her heels.

One was missing a narrow silver cap from the heel.

Detective Brooks placed an evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a silver fragment recovered beside Khloe.

“Does this belong to your shoe?”

Isabella glanced down.

“I don’t know.”

Brooks leaned back.

“We have video.”

Isabella’s face remained calm.

“You have fragments from a corrupted camera.”

“We have enough.”

“My attorneys will decide that.”

“Your attorneys cannot erase what happened.”

Isabella smiled faintly.

“You would be surprised what attorneys can erase.”

Brooks studied her.

“You disabled the camera.”

“No.”

“You coordinated with Adrian Vale.”

For the first time, Isabella lost control.

Only for half a second.

But Brooks saw it.

“I don’t know that name.”

“Interesting. I didn’t show you his picture.”

Isabella said nothing.

Brooks moved closer.

“Why was he outside the suite?”

“I asked for an attorney.”

“You’ll get one.”

The detective stood.

“But before your attorney arrives, think about this: Marcus Thorne is upstairs with his wife. Adrian Vale has disappeared. You’re sitting alone in a locked room.”

Isabella’s eyes followed her to the door.

“You think Marcus will protect you,” Brooks said. “Men like Marcus protect themselves.”

After Brooks left, Isabella waited thirty seconds.

Then she reached inside the lining of her crimson gown and removed a tiny black phone.

The device had no brand, no visible number and only one stored contact.

She typed a message.

The footage survived.

A reply appeared almost immediately.

Then change the story.

Isabella typed back.

Khloe heard me mention the plan.

The response came after a longer pause.

She cannot be allowed to remember it clearly.

Isabella stared at the screen.

For the first time that night, fear entered her eyes.

Upstairs, Khloe lay alone after Nathaniel stepped out to make calls.

She was exhausted, but her mind refused to rest.

Marcus entered without knocking.

The nurses had removed his jacket and loosened his bow tie. He looked less like a billionaire and more like a man who had spent years preparing for a disaster that had finally arrived.

Khloe did not look at him.

“Did you sleep with her?”

Marcus stopped.

“No.”

“Did you want to?”

“No.”

“Did you tell her I was unstable?”

“I told her you were suspicious.”

Khloe turned her head.

“Suspicious of what?”

Marcus closed the door.

“Of me.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

“No. It doesn’t.”

He moved closer but kept distance between them.

“Adrian Vale found evidence of a criminal network using Thorne Global contracts to move money through hospitals, charities and construction projects.”

Khloe’s breathing slowed.

“Your company?”

“My company was one of the vehicles.”

“Were you involved?”

“I discovered it too late.”

“How late?”

“After my father died.”

Khloe stared at him.

Marcus’s father, Everett Thorne, had built the empire from a regional construction firm into an international corporation.

He had also treated Khloe like a daughter.

“You’re saying Everett was involved?”

“I’m saying my father built more than a company.”

Marcus looked toward the dark window.

“He built a system. Judges, executives, physicians, politicians. They protected one another.”

“And Isabella?”

“Her father was part of it.”

“Vittorio Rossi?”

Marcus nodded.

“He ran the money.”

“Why did Isabella attack me?”

Marcus did not answer.

Khloe pushed herself upright despite the pain.

“What did she mean when she said I was supposed to carry your child and disappear?”

Marcus’s face tightened.

“She wasn’t supposed to know about that.”

Khloe felt the room turn cold.

“Know about what?”

Marcus approached the bed.

“When we met, I did not know who you were.”

“You knew exactly who I was.”

“I knew your name. I knew your family. I did not know what was hidden in your bloodline.”

Khloe’s hand moved protectively over her stomach.

“What does that mean?”

Before Marcus could answer, the lights went out.

The monitor beside Khloe’s bed switched to emergency power.

A soft alarm began to beep.

Marcus turned toward the door.

The handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone outside was trying to enter.

Marcus placed himself between the door and Khloe.

“Call security.”

Khloe pressed the emergency button.

Nothing happened.

The door opened.

A nurse stepped inside carrying a syringe.

Khloe did not recognize her.

Marcus did.

“Stop.”

The woman lunged.

Marcus caught her wrist.

The syringe fell, skidded under the bed and shattered.

The nurse drove her shoulder into him, but Marcus forced her against the wall.

Nathaniel and two officers rushed in seconds later.

The woman stopped resisting.

Her eyes fixed on Khloe.

“You should have disappeared when you had the chance.”

Then she bit down on something hidden inside her mouth.

Her body went limp.

Nathaniel checked her pulse.

“What did she take?”

Marcus stared at the broken syringe.

“She was sent to erase Khloe’s memory.”

Khloe looked at her husband.

“No,” she whispered.

May you like

Marcus turned toward her.

“She was sent to kill you.”
