Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK

Khloe could not speak.

The woman standing beside her bed was older than the mother in the photographs, but the eyes were the same.

Gray-green.

Identical to Khloe’s.

Rebecca Hale touched the edge of the breakfast tray.

“You look like Daniel.”

Khloe’s throat tightened.

“My mother is dead.”

Rebecca flinched.

“That is what they wanted you to believe.”

“Who are you?”

“Your mother.”

“Prove it.”

Rebecca removed a chain from beneath her uniform.

A small silver locket hung from it.

Khloe had worn its matching half since childhood.

Nathaniel had told her it was the only item recovered after Rebecca’s death.

Khloe opened her locket.

The broken edges matched perfectly.

Still, she did not trust her.

“Why now?”

“Because Vittorio knows the truth is coming out.”

“Where have you been?”

“Hidden. Controlled. Watched.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I was told you died.”

The words cut through Khloe’s anger.

Rebecca stepped closer.

“After your birth, Everett separated us. I was drugged. When I woke, they told me both my daughters were dead.”

“But you knew Evelyn survived.”

“Years later.”

“Did you find her?”

“I tried. Vittorio moved her constantly.”

Khloe studied the woman.

“Why were you declared dead?”

“Because I discovered Project Cradle was not only studying bloodlines. They were creating legal identities, manipulating inheritances and arranging children for powerful families.”

Khloe’s stomach turned.

“My father?”

“Daniel tried to expose them.”

“And they killed him.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“Vittorio ordered it. Everett allowed it.”

Khloe looked toward the door.

“Uncle Nathan needs to hear this.”

Rebecca grabbed her wrist.

“No.”

Khloe pulled away.

“Why?”

“Because Nathaniel gave them the key.”

Khloe stared at her.

“That isn’t true.”

“He believed he was protecting you. Vittorio threatened to kill you unless Nathaniel surrendered Daniel’s archive key.”

The betrayal was different from murder.

But it was still betrayal.

Rebecca continued.

“The key was not physical. It was a genetic sequence taken from Daniel’s blood.”

“Then why did he give Nathaniel a key?”

“To mislead anyone watching him.”

Khloe tried to process the information.

“What opens the archive?”

“You.”

Rebecca looked at Khloe’s hand.

“And Evelyn.”

The door handle moved.

Rebecca put on her mask again.

Nathaniel entered.

He stopped when he saw the nurse.

“Who are you?”

Rebecca removed the mask.

Nathaniel stumbled backward.

“Rebecca?”

For twenty-eight years, Nathaniel had imagined this moment.

In none of those fantasies had his sister looked at him with such anger.

“You gave Vittorio the key,” she said.

Nathaniel’s face collapsed.

“He threatened Khloe.”

“You let him erase me.”

“I thought you were dead.”

“You didn’t search hard enough.”

“I searched for twenty years.”

“Quietly. Carefully. Never risking your position.”

Nathaniel closed the door.

“You don’t know what I did.”

“I know what you failed to do.”

Khloe raised her voice.

“Stop.”

Both turned toward her.

“I have spent one night listening to people explain how their lies protected me.”

She looked at Rebecca.

“If you came here to recruit me into another secret plan, leave.”

Rebecca stared at her daughter.

“I came to save you.”

“Then tell me everything.”

Rebecca sat.

“The archive can only be opened by combining DNA from both surviving Hale daughters. Daniel designed it that way after discovering Lillian was alive.”

“What is inside?”

“Evidence. Ownership records. Names. And a final control protocol capable of transferring the entire Thorne trust away from the criminal network.”

“To whom?”

“To the Hale Foundation.”

Nathaniel exhaled.

“A public medical charity.”

“Yes.”

Khloe understood her father’s plan.

No billionaire heir.

No hidden family ruler.

The empire would fund hospitals and victims.

“Where is the archive?” she asked.

Rebecca looked toward Nathaniel.

“Beneath the original Thorne mansion.”

Khloe remembered Adrian’s warning.

Vittorio was using tunnels under the estate.

Marcus was heading toward danger while the key to everything lay inside his home.

Khloe reached for her phone.

No signal.

Nathaniel checked his.

The hospital network had failed again.

Rebecca stood.

“Vittorio knows we are together.”

The lights flickered.

A message appeared on the television screen.

LIVE FEED CONNECTED.

Marcus’s estate appeared.

Isabella stood inside the grand library.

Behind her, flames climbed the curtains.

Vittorio Rossi entered the frame.

He was alive.

Older.

Thinner.

Smiling.

“Khloe,” he said into the camera. “Bring your sister and mother to the Thorne estate.”

The camera shifted.

Marcus was on his knees with a gun pressed against his head.

Isabella stood behind him.

May you like

Vittorio’s smile widened.

“Or become a widow before your child is born.”
