Chapter 11 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Marcus stared at the terminal.
Thorne Global was not merely a company.
It was the work of three generations, seventy thousand employees and billions of dollars in global assets.
It was also the prison his father had built around him.
The screen displayed two choices.
AUTHORIZE RELEASE.
DENY RELEASE.
A timer counted down from fifty-eight minutes.
Nathaniel looked at Marcus.
âYou know what happens if you release it.â
âYes.â
âThe board will remove you.â
âYes.â
âYour family assets may be frozen.â
âYes.â
Khloe watched her husbandâs face.
She understood his silence.
For years, Marcus had claimed he remained inside the empire to destroy the criminal network.
Now he had the chance.
But doing so meant surrendering everything that had defined him.
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
âHe wonât do it.â
Marcus looked at her.
âYou think you know me.â
âI know men who inherit power.â
Khloe slowly stood.
Pain tightened through her side again.
She approached Marcus.
âYou do not have to prove anything to me.â
He looked at her.
âThat is exactly what I need to do.â
âNo. You need to make the decision you can live with after tonight.â
âWhat if I lose everything?â
Khloeâs eyes filled.
âYou already lost my trust.â
The honesty struck him.
âBut you havenât lost the chance to become someone our child can trust.â
Marcus placed his hand on the scanner.
He selected AUTHORIZE RELEASE.
The terminal requested voice confirmation.
Marcus took a breath.
âI, Marcus Everett Thorne, authorize the complete release of the Hale archive and surrender all controlling rights connected to the succession trust.â
CONFIRMATION ACCEPTED.
Across the country, encrypted files began transmitting to federal agencies, journalists, courts and international regulators.
Accounts were flagged.
Arrest warrants were generated.
Hidden medical trials, fraudulent contracts and decades of bribery began emerging into daylight.
Inside the sealed vault, Vittorio pounded against the door.
âYou fool!â he shouted through the speaker. âYou destroyed your own name!â
Marcus faced the vault.
âNo. You did.â
The fire above them intensified.
A support beam crashed somewhere in the mansion.
Brooks ordered everyone toward the stairs.
âWhat about Vittorio?â Isabella asked weakly.
Nathaniel and Marcus exchanged a look.
The vault had an emergency release.
Opening it might allow Vittorio to escape.
Leaving it sealed could allow the fire to kill him.
Khloe looked toward the security monitor.
Vittorio stood inside the vault, surrounded by evidence of his crimes.
âOpen it,â she said.
Evelyn stared at her.
âWhy?â
âBecause justice is not burying someone alive.â
Marcus entered the emergency code.
The vault opened.
Vittorio emerged coughing.
He carried a pistol.
Before anyone could react, he aimed at Khloe.
Marcus moved in front of her.
The gun fired.
Marcus fell.
Khloe screamed.
Brooks shot Vittorio in the shoulder.
He collapsed.
Nathaniel rushed to Marcus.
The bullet had entered beneath his ribs.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Khloe dropped beside him.
âStay with me.â
Marcus tried to smile.
âYou said not to make promises I couldnât control.â
âThen donât promise. Just stay.â
His eyes closed.
Above them, firefighters entered the estate.
Paramedics carried Marcus and Isabella outside.
Vittorio was arrested.
Evelyn sat handcuffed beside a police vehicle, watching the mansion burn.
Rebecca stood beside Khloe.
Dawn broke over the trees.
For the first time, the Thorne estate looked less like a palace and more like what it had always been.
A monument built over buried crimes.
At the hospital, surgeons operated on Marcus for six hours.
Khloe waited in a private room under continuous monitoring.
Every contraction made her fear the baby was coming.
Nathaniel moved between her room and the operating floor.
Rebecca remained nearby but did not pressure Khloe to speak.
Evelyn was transferred to federal custody.
Isabella survived surgery.
Detective Brooks delivered the first public report.
More than forty officials had been detained.
Three judges resigned.
Two hospital executives disappeared.
The board of Thorne Global suspended Marcus and froze his voting authority.
The companyâs stock collapsed before trading was halted.
By noon, every news network in America carried the same image.
Marcus Thorne standing beside Khloe at the charity gala hours before the attack.
The perfect billionaire couple.
The headline called it the fall of an empire.
Khloe knew better.
The empire had fallen years ago.
The world was only now hearing the sound.
At three forty-seven, Nathaniel entered.
Marcus was alive.
The bullet had missed his heart by less than an inch.
Khloe covered her face and cried.
Not because everything was forgiven.
Not because the lies no longer mattered.
Because love and betrayal could exist in the same heart, and that truth was harder than hatred.
Nathaniel sat beside her.
âThereâs something else.â
Khloe lowered her hands.
âWhat?â
âThe archive included a sealed message addressed to you.â
âFrom my father?â
âNo.â
Nathaniel handed her a tablet.
The message had been recorded seven months earlier.
Before Khloe knew she was pregnant.
The person on-screen was Marcus.
âIf you are seeing this,â he said, âthen I failed to tell you the truth before the truth found us.â
Khloe stared at his image.
Marcus continued.
âI discovered that Project Cradle arranged our first meeting. I also discovered something Elaine never knew.â
May you like
He looked directly into the camera.
âKhloe, the succession child may not be biologically mine.â
