Chapter 1 - The Last Notification

Damian’s phone kept vibrating long after Elena disappeared through the conference room doors.
Each notification stripped away another piece of the life he had spent years convincing everyone belonged to him.
Corporate card suspended.
Executive access revoked.
Private aviation account frozen.
Investment portfolio restricted.
Penthouse ownership under review.
Damian stared at the screen until the words blurred together.
“This isn’t legal.”
Nobody answered him.
The men and women who once jumped whenever he entered a room were suddenly fascinated by their laptops, their papers, and the polished surface of the table.
Only Veronica remained beside him.
For the first time since Damian had met her, she looked frightened.
“Damian.”
He ignored her.
“Damian, look at me.”
He finally turned.
“What?”
“What exactly did you sign?”
His face hardened.
“What are you talking about?”
Veronica stepped closer.
“Over the last three years.”
“The restructurings.”
“The holding agreements.”
“The private equity transfers.”
“All those documents your attorneys kept bringing to the house.”
Damian’s anger flickered into uncertainty.
“They were standard.”
“Were they?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
A security officer entered the room.
“Mr. Cross, you have ten minutes to collect your personal belongings.”
Damian laughed.
It sounded thin even to him.
“You work for me.”
“No, sir.”
The guard’s expression didn’t move.
“I work for Voss Global Holdings.”
That name hit differently now.
Voss.
Elena’s name.
Not his.
Never his.
Damian grabbed his jacket.
“This changes nothing.”
The guard said nothing.
Damian walked toward the elevator with Veronica following.
The doors had almost closed when a woman rushed down the hallway.
It was Amelia Reed, Damian’s executive assistant.
Her face was pale.
She held a folder against her chest.
“Sir.”
Damian stopped the doors.
“What now?”
Amelia glanced toward the security cameras.
Then toward Veronica.
“I think you need to see this.”
She handed him the folder.
Inside was a copy of a transfer agreement signed eleven months earlier.
Damian recognized his own signature immediately.
Beneath it was a clause he had never noticed.
Upon breach of fiduciary duty, executive authority would automatically revert to the principal shareholder.
Elena Voss.
Damian’s stomach tightened.
“I never agreed to this.”
Amelia lowered her voice.
“You did.”
“That’s your signature.”
Damian flipped to the next page.
Another clause.
Then another.
With every page, his expression changed.
He had signed away control piece by piece.
Not because Elena tricked him.
Because he had never bothered to read anything he believed was beneath him.
Veronica leaned over his shoulder.
Then she froze.
At the bottom of the final page was another signature.
Hers.
“What the hell is that?”
Amelia looked directly at her.
“You signed as a witness.”
Veronica stepped backward.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I would remember.”
Amelia’s eyes sharpened.
“You were at the Lake Como retreat.”
“September seventeenth.”
“You signed after dinner.”
Veronica went completely still.
Damian turned toward her.
Slowly.
“What else did you sign?”
Veronica’s face drained of color.
“I don’t know.”
May you like
The elevator doors closed.
And for the first time, Damian realized Elena might not be the only person who had been keeping secrets.
